Early Morning Update - January 14, 2025

Spot Block cheese erased Friday’s losses yesterday with a 9 cent rally – back to $1.9100 – on 3 trades. Barrel cheese gained 3 cents to close at $1.8800. To pull a line from yesterday’s morning comment: last week’s selloff - outside of likely causing some would-be buyers to stand away from the market for now – hasn’t changed the overriding current market dynamics. It will be some time before the US cheesemakers can build inventories at a more normal pace. Last week’s weakness clearly did not make buyers step away but in fact encouraged them to buy the dip. The market is telling us demand for cheese – be it pipeline refilling or just building up some inventory – is still alive and well. We’ve said that the $1.85-$1.95 cheese price average seems to be a good market clearing level for cheese and that continues to be the case so far this week.

Futures opened lower yesterday on follow-thru selling from Friday but quickly turned and rallied as spot prices rose. Trade volumes were off a bit from Friday’s sell off, which would tend to suggest that the power in the market is downward looking. Said another way, despite the rally yesterday futures price action is net negative.

On the other hand, the increase in volatility the past two trading sessions sometimes pushes participants out of the market as violent moves are not for the faint of heart. Hedgers also typically have price levels they want to trade and some are playing catch up still having initially thought about retooling their objectives – on both sides – from Friday’s decline. When the dust settled, just over 1,500 Class III and 434 Cheese futures changed hands with open interest increasing for both. The options trade is active and rather stable in terms of volume but subdued from December levels (closer to 1,000 Class III options vs 2,500 to over 4,000 on many days in December).

We look for a mixed start for Class III and Cheese as nearby contracts want to find a block of air to fly in for a little while. The market will likely want to consolidate the recent up and down action, which may usher in a more stable trade so long as cheese hangs out where with think it can ($1.85-$1.95 avg).

Butter futures also erased some of Friday’s losses and did so with more vigor. 317 Butter futures traded Monday with open interest increasing by 146 contracts. The buyer beat goes on here as longer-term hedgers continue to seek 2025 price coverage. This, in turn, would appear to be at least partially responsible for another price increase for spot. Spot butter gained 1.25 cents yesterday to close at $261.250. This time the bump came with some volume – 16 loads changed hands. So that butter we have an inkling is out there is starting to make itself known here during the spot call. But for now buyers are the aggressors so that can mean more spot strength in the offing. We look for a mixed start to the session.

The volume-price dynamic for futures direction may be most clear for NFDM market. On Friday prices sold off on over 600 contracts. Yesterday’s prices bounced on just 81 trades. A light volume bounce is akin to getting up dazed after being knocked down by Mike Tyson (or Jake Paul if you prefer). He’s gotta let you up to hit you again. That said, as we mentioned in yesterday’s  note that Friday’s selloff appeared to be a capitulation of sorts in which participants threw up their hands and gave up on higher prices. That can happen at the bottom of a trading range. Given that the US powder market has lived well north of the global market for some time, we’re reticent to say the market is wrong especially as spot traded 4x yesterday finishing unchanged on the day.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.
