Class III, Cheese, Block and Dry Whey Futures all have expanded limits today.
What goes up must come down was the theme Tuesday as nearby futures prices are right back down to where they were last Tuesday – June 18. Class III and Cheese futures opened mostly weaker to start Tuesday as the buoyant Monday trade succumbed to a lack of fresh impetus. The market just felt tired Monday night into Tuesday and that early weakness was exacerbated by increased selling pressure – and no block bids - during the spot call. Class III volume jumped with over 3,300 contracts changing hands and open interest up a paltry 39 contracts. This is what a choppy market looks like. Positions changing hands, big swings, and fickle real direction.
We could be at a turning point to a bigger downward correction as we get into a holiday situation where buyers are quieting down. Meanwhile, we have some fresh cheese out there and there are sellers who’d like to turn that cheese into cash at quarter end, which may mean more price weakness for spot and ultimately futures. Of course, this was the thought before we got yesterday’s Cold Storage report.
Cheese stocks came in a whopping 32 million pounds lower than forecast with April revised down by 16 million. Stocks at the end of May were down 3.7% compared to our forecast of -1.6%. This is the second largest YoY decline in cheese stocks for May that we’ve seen since 2006. The only larger decline was 2014. 2024 Class III and Cheese futures are up on the news overnight, but will need more than just this report to solidify strength throughout the day. In other words, if spot is down – futures ought to falter.

Spot butter continued to see pressure yesterday falling 3,25 cents on 6 trades, making new lows for June. That induced selling in futures by as much as 3 cents in nearby months. Nov24 futures briefly broke the 3 dollar mark before recovering after the Cold Storage report. Stocks came in 16 million lbs below expectations but still up 3.4% YoY. But that is down from 9.2% in April. Domestic demand likely rebounded after being flat Feb-Apr. The futures market did catch a bid after the report and into today as the market is looking to open above settlement prices.
GDT Pulse yesterday finished lower with WMP C2 (delivery in two months) down 1.2% to $3,345/MT and SMP C2 down 4.2% to $2,450/MT 9$1.15/lb). That pressured CME nonfat futures yesterday morning ahead of spot trading 1-2 cents lower. Spot was active trading down as much as 1.25 cents to 1.18 before settling down a ½ cent to 1.1875 on 7 trades. Futures volume recovered with 199 contracts trading as open interest rose slightly by 29 contracts. Overall, NFMD prices continue to trade in a range but are approaching support that was seen earlier in the month. Official news broke yesterday of an Algerian ONIL tender which is running through today so we should likely hear details of that later this week. Nonetheless it did little to support the market.

Daily CME spot dairy market price summary

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
