Spot cheese closed out last week on a rather stable note with block cheese up a quarter penny and barrels steady on the day. Ample futures buy side interest kept Class III and Cheese futures firm all day despite a mild setback around the spot call. As we’ve said in previous morning comments, Class III and Cheese futures are technically bullish. That said, it seems there was little fresh news on Friday to keep derivatives as well supported as they are. Herein lies the lesson: when the winds of a market are blowing one direction, logic often gets thrown out the window for a period of time.

While we’d suggest to you that there is indeed indications of better demand for fresh cheese – and particularly barrel cheese here recently – we respect the price move that has happened thus far and expect the cheese market to try to find some semblance of balance around or just below current levels. The availability of fresh milk or lack thereof will still be a factor to consider moving forward, but it’s importance will ebb and flow as the spot cheese market gets checked with bouts of product we believe can still come to the market. This doesn’t necessarily change the overall bullish dynamic of the market, just points to what could be a period of increased volatility as the market – at some point we believe – will try to consolidate the $3.00/cwt rally seen in the last month (June).

Butter futures volume remained strong to end the week, in line with volumes seen Wed/Thrus, trading 331 contracts with open interest rosing by 132 contracts. Futures prices were mixed to mostly lower as prices consolidate near fresh contracts highs made last week. Spot butter made a new 2024 high on Friday after breaking out of a sideways price action through the end of April. Tighter milk supplies, and what could be improving cheese demand could start to shift some milk out of butter and justify higher prices later this year.

The USDA will release the March Dairy Products report on Monday. My guess is it will look a lot like the Jan/Feb reports with cheese production weak, butter production up and NFDM+SMP production down.

Spot nonfat pushed 1.25 cents higher on Friday to it’s highest price since mid-April. Volume was OK through the end of the weak with 139 contracts trading on Friday as open interest rose by just 24 contracts so we saw a good mix of new buying and selling. Nonfat prices have been the weakest of the complex lately which continues to be dominated by weak demand globally and more volume, specially SMP, out of NZ.

Dairy cow slaughter in the U.S. continues to be weak, running 13.2% below year-ago levels year-to-date following the recent 9.3% decline from last year in the 16th week of the year. Total cattle slaughter is much closer to year-ago levels, at a deficit to year-ago levels of 1.2% for the week ending 4/20.
