February rainfall triples seasonal average at some coffee stations, Colombia’s Cenicafé says

Bogota (Coffee Network) – Rainfall in Colombia’s main coffee-growing regions averaged about twice the historical levels for February, with some weather stations recording precipitation more than three times the seasonal norm, according to the coffee research institute Cenicafé.

At the Manuel Mallarino coffee station in the department of Valle del Cauca, 337mm of rainfall was recorded in February, compared with a historical average of 102mm for the month, a Cenicafé report showed.

The El Tambo station in Cauca — the country’s fourth-largest coffee-producing department — recorded 383mm of rainfall in February, compared with a historical February average of 175mm.

In the Caribbean department of Magdalena, the La Victoria coffee weather station recorded 201mm of rainfall, compared with just 13mm in February in previous years.

January and February are typically dry months in Colombia’s coffee regions. However, a cold front moving from the Northern Hemisphere toward the Caribbean triggered alerts from authorities due to the unusual increase in rainfall during this period.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) warned the phenomenon could cause flooding, flash floods, landslides and storm surges. The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) said the conditions are atypical for this time of year and have already caused emergencies in several regions in the north and northwest of the country.

Rainfall was also above average across most coffee-growing regions, and plantations are likely to face higher-than-normal precipitation in March, which marks the start of Colombia’s first rainy season, Cenicafé added.

Torrential rains have also delayed the key flowering period in some coffee-growing areas, which could reduce output during the main harvest between October and December. Colombia typically requires strong sunshine and a period of water deficit about eight months before harvest to ensure strong yields.

Coffee production in Colombia, the world’s third-largest coffee producer, totaled 869,000 bags in February, down 36% from 1.361 million bags in the same month last year, the National Federation of Coffee Growers said.

February output was also slightly below the 893,000 bags produced in January.

Over the past 12 months, Colombia produced 12.722 million bags, down 14% from 14.795 million bags in the same period a year earlier.

“February confirms a significant adjustment in supply; Colombia’s coffee sector is expressing concern about the impact on production and current prices,” said Germán Bahamón, general manager of the National Federation of Coffee Growers.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
