Fertilizer Repricing Starts and Ends with the Farmer

The corn to potash ratio has fallen into the bottom 20% of its multi-year range, and only one week in five over the past several years has offered value as good as or better than the present one. Fertilizer price increases usually start with the buyer rather than the seller, because a grain rally pulls farmer demand forward, retailers restock behind it and manufacturers reprice into the wave that follows. That sequence is what makes fertilizer affordability windows short, and it explains why a favorable ratio is a moment rather than a condition. What makes this particular window more fragile is a trade relationship that carries close to 90% of U.S. potash imports.

Josh Linville is Vice President of Fertilizer at StoneX, where he oversees the firm's global fertilizer department and its fertilizer trade desk from Kansas City. He works across North American and global crop input markets, following the pricing basis between benchmark and local values and the retailer and manufacturer behavior that turns a grain rally into a higher fertilizer bill.

Key Themes from the Discussion

  • The corn to potash ratio sits in the bottom 20% of its range over the past several years.
  • Canada supplies close to 90% of U.S. potash imports, with Russia holding a portion of the remainder.
  • NOLA DAP ranks among the cheapest phosphate prices globally, leaving little room for further decline.

Fertilizer Demand Waves Lift Prices Before Buyers React

"My fear is that we're going to see a rush of demand", Josh Linville says, and that rush is the mechanism that closes a cheap fertilizer window. Grain rallies do not lift fertilizer prices directly. Farmers buy, retailers buy behind them to cover what they have sold, and once "you get this demand wave rolling" manufacturers price into it. The practical effect for a buyer is that the published ratio lags their own opportunity, because the number improves before the market notices and deteriorates as soon as it does.

Canadian Import Concentration Pushes Tariff Costs Onto U.S. Farmers

United States potash supply is concentrated in a single trade relationship, which turns a policy dispute into a physical cost problem. According to Linville, "our number one supplier of imported potash is Canada. Nearly 90% of our import flow comes from there", with a portion of the remainder arriving from Russia. Potash has so far been shielded by the existing trade agreement, but both governments have raised it as leverage, and if the agreement lapses either side can apply tariffs to the flow. Because substitution at that volume is slow and the alternative origins are politically constrained, the incremental cost of a tariff travels down the chain and settles on the domestic farmer rather than the exporter.

Phosphate Production Costs Block Any Further Price Decline

Phosphate prices are not falling despite fresh tons arriving from Morocco, and the reason is a floor built from three separate supports. NOLA DAP already ranked among the cheapest phosphate prices globally before the shipments began, much of what is arriving is neither DAP nor MAP and therefore misses what most of the market needs, and reviving global demand gives North American producers an export alternative whenever domestic values soften. Producers can sell those tons abroad instead of discounting them at home, which removes the pressure that added supply would normally create. Prices, Linville explains, are hard to move lower once "you're already the lowest price in the world, and you're already dealing with production costs that are sky high".
