Expectations for higher U.S. interest rates are once again becoming a dominant force across financial markets. The resulting strength in the U.S. Dollar Index is placing renewed pressure on gold and silver, despite both metals approaching historically significant technical support. Rather than focusing solely on precious metals themselves, investors are increasingly watching the interaction between monetary policy expectations, the U.S. dollar and long-term price structures. That relationship could determine whether current weakness develops into a deeper correction or a longer-term buying opportunity.
Razan Hilal, FOREX.com Market Analyst, specializes in technical and macro market analysis across foreign exchange and precious metals. Her cross-asset approach provides a distinctive perspective by linking movements in the U.S. Dollar Index directly to the evolving outlook for gold and silver during periods of shifting monetary policy expectations.
Key Themes
Higher U.S. rate expectations continue supporting the U.S. Dollar Index and weighing on gold and silver.
Major technical levels across the U.S. Dollar Index could determine whether precious metals extend their correction.
Historical support zones may eventually provide attractive long-term accumulation opportunities despite current weakness.
Interest Rate Expectations Strengthen Dollar Pressure
The U.S. Dollar Index is becoming the primary driver of sentiment across precious metals as interest rate expectations continue to evolve. Hilal notes that the U.S. Dollar Index is attempting to hold above a major technical resistance zone before potentially targeting higher levels, while adding that a move toward 107 could provide "further confirmation for extended lows across gold and silver prices". Investors are increasingly monitoring the dollar rather than gold alone when assessing downside risks. As long as expectations for tighter monetary policy continue supporting the U.S. dollar, gold and silver may struggle to establish a sustained recovery.
Gold Technical Levels Could Define the Next Cycle
Gold is approaching historically significant support despite remaining under pressure from dollar strength. Hilal highlights that price action is attempting to remain below the 27.2% Fibonacci retracement and warns that sustained weakness could target lower historical support before creating another opportunity for long-term buyers. hee also identifies "another potential long term accumulation opportunity on the gold chart" should deeper support levels be tested. Consequently, the current correction may represent a repricing driven by monetary policy expectations rather than a structural breakdown in the longer-term outlook for precious metals.
Silver Support Depends on Dollar Momentum
Silver is following many of the same macro forces affecting gold, although its technical structure also points toward important long-term support. Hilal observes that oversold conditions resemble previous turning points while explaining that sustained strength above key resistance could restore bullish momentum, whereas continued weakness would expose multi-decade support levels. He describes the lower zone as "a long term accumulation or buying opportunity on the silver chart". As a result, future movements in the U.S. Dollar Index may prove more influential than traditional safe-haven demand in determining the next major trend for silver prices.
