Half of Colombian Territory Including Coffee Region Expects More Rainfall During la Niña: Government

Coffee Network (Bogota)_ The Colombian minister of environment requested the agricultural sector, including the coffee subsector, to get ready as chances of La Niña has increased to 69% during the quarter July-September, bringing a combination of tornados, and increased rainfall, the Minister of the Environment, Susana Muhamad, said yesterday.

The director of the weather institute Ideam said the world have had warm oceans for thirteen consecutive months and it is breaking records in terms of air temperature for eleven consecutive months. Ideam said the temperature is stabilizing, but the El Niño phenomenon cannot yet be declared over.

In May and June, rainfall will be in the average of previous years, but in July with the possible arrival of La Niña what is expected is that there will be rainfall above what normal; However, the situation would not be the same for the entire national territory.

According to the July climate prediction, in the northern half of the country there will be more rainfall, with the Pacific, Caribbean and Andean regions being impacted. While the southern area in the Orinoquia and Amazon regions will register rainfall deficits.

Given this panorama, the Ministers of Environment and Agriculture asked the agricultural sector to prepare for what is coming in the second quarter of 2024.

“We are going to have half the country with the threat of more rain and half the country with the threat of less rain. It is time to act, this is the key moment to be able to advance all the preparations,” Muhamad said.

The Minister of Agriculture, Jhenifer Mojica, pointed out that the agricultural and livestock sector could be one of the most affected, which is why she also called on the sector to prepare depending on the production region. That is, in the eastern plains area it is necessary to prepare for a possible decrease in rainfall, while in the Caribbean and the Andes it is necessary to make adjustments for possible floods.

“We want to tell the agricultural sector that we cannot let our guard down and it is time to continue moving forward. For the agriculture sector this creates a great challenge. Last year, an enlistment plan was generated. We cannot change the climate, but we can adapt to it,” Mojica highlighted.
