Nasdaq Support Break Could Deepen the Selloff

By: Editorial Team, StoneX Media

As of late July 2026, the Nasdaq is navigating a period of heightened uncertainty as investors reassess monetary policy expectations alongside persistent geopolitical tensions. A stronger U.S. dollar and growing expectations of a more hawkish Federal Reserve are challenging the optimism generated by corporate earnings. Rather than focusing solely on company fundamentals, investors are increasingly watching technical levels that could determine whether risk appetite stabilizes or deteriorates further. The current environment places market structure and macroeconomic forces at the centre of the Nasdaq outlook.

Razan Hilal, StoneX Market Analyst, specializes in technical and macro market analysis across foreign exchange, equities and commodities. Her cross-asset approach connects movements in the U.S. dollar, Federal Reserve expectations and equity market structure, offering a broader perspective on how technical levels can influence investor positioning during periods of elevated uncertainty.

Key Themes

  • The Nasdaq remains below a well-defined short-term downtrend channel with key Fibonacci support levels under pressure.
  • Federal Reserve expectations and U.S. dollar strength continue to weigh on broader risk sentiment.
  • A recovery in technology stocks may require easing geopolitical tensions alongside a less hawkish monetary policy outlook.

Nasdaq Support Failure Could Accelerate Selling

The Nasdaq is approaching an important technical support area that may determine whether the current correction extends. Hilal notes that the index is "holding below the bounds of a respected downtrend channel between June and July 2026", highlighting that 27,700 represents a critical support level. A decisive move beneath that area could expose deeper Fibonacci retracement targets around 27,000 and 26,800, potentially pushing market momentum into oversold territory. Although oversold conditions can eventually attract buyers, investors may first need to navigate a period of heightened volatility before confidence returns.

Federal Reserve Expectations Continue Driving Risk Sentiment

Federal Reserve policy expectations remain one of the most influential drivers of Nasdaq performance because they are reinforcing U.S. dollar strength and tightening financial conditions. Hilal explains that markets are "increasingly pricing a hawkish Federal Reserve tone", while adding that rising rate expectations are "keeping the U.S. dollar index supported against major market currencies and weighing on broader risk sentiment." As a result, stronger dollar conditions could continue to pressure growth-oriented technology stocks until policy expectations begin to soften. Conversely, Hilal suggests that easing U.S.-Iran tensions, a less hawkish Federal Reserve and stronger mega-cap earnings could provide the combination needed for the Nasdaq to challenge record highs once again.
