July 25 – All eyes are on the Federal Reserve this week, widely expected to raise interest rates by another 75 basis points in their July policy meeting tomorrow and Wednesday; that would bring rates back to pre-COVID highs, to a roughly “neutral” level in the eyes of Fed officials – no longer supporting the economy. Inflation has continued to spike since the Fed started raising rates back in March, with no endpoint seen there, and thus no resolution just yet in terms of just how high our central bank will go to combat it. Their statement post-meeting on Wednesday will be closely watched for clues. The next Fed meeting after this one is set for September 20-21.

In the meantime, the economy is solid overall considering the inflation vs rates debate, with the jobs market hanging in, though some sectors are starting to show cracks. Housing is one of those, with manufacturing slowing a bit as well. The Chicago Fed’s National Activity Index for June came in at -0.19, down from the average 0.0 (flat) trade expectation, with May revised down from +0.01 to -0.19 as well. The negative reading indicates below-trend growth in the national economy for each of the last two months.

All parties agreed on a deal on Friday to create a grain export corridor from multiple Ukraine ports; that was quickly followed on Saturday by Russian forces launching missiles at one of those ports (Odesa). The Kremlin insists that the strike was intended for a military target and in no way related to the opening of the grain export infrastructure, and they seem to remain on board with the export corridor. Ukraine is pushing to start shipping grain as soon as this week from the port of Chornomorsk, and within the next two weeks from all re-opened ports. There is no limit on how much grain can be exported, and fertilizer can come and go as well; limiting factors will be the size of ships used (smaller than the usual panamax cargoes) and of course Russia’s cooperation…

The grains are popping from six-month lows to open the week, with a brief period of more comfortable weather quickly erased again in August. Weekend rains were heavy for some but mostly spotty overall and confined to the northeastern belt, and action favors the southern belt over coming days/weeks. The question will be whether or not recent rains and temps were decent enough for the heart of the belt (Iowa and surroundings) during pollination, and it will be tough to find that out until the combines begin to roll. Conditions are definitely better northeast, and much worse southwest. Commodity Weather Group forecasts are below; the weather firm did note in a blog post Friday that while the Midwest summer so far is ranking as one of the hottest in the last four-plus decades, it is unusual in that extremely hot days and warm nights have been lacking – those crop-killers have held to the southwest thus far.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 6

August 6 – Stocks remain quietly mixed at midday as both the S&P 500 and Dow Jones remain just below their fresh all-time highs put in yesterday. This is allowing the VIX to cool to a four-week low below the 15.4 mark, reflecting the collective sigh of relief in the market amid largely better than expected U.S. economic data today. The dollar remains quietly in the green in its relatively tight range this week, trading at 99.9 at the time of writing. Treasuries remain elevated but have cooled from their recent peaks, with 30-year yields trading at 5.189%, 10-year yields trading at 4.647%, and 2-year yields trading at 4.229% at midday. Crude oil also remains quietly in the green, with nearby WTI up 2.3% on the day trading near $76.80 and nearby Brent up 2.4% on the day trading near $81.40. The ags remain mixed, with the wheat complex now squarely in the red while corn and soybeans cling to small gains, and the livestock complex largely pushes lower.
