Peru Coffee Exports Fell 54% in January-May
Coffee Network (Bogotá)- Peru shipped 457,710 bags in January-May, a 54% drop compared to the 985,138 bags exported in the same period in 2024, reflecting the seasonality of the national coffee production cycle, according to the coffee and cocoa chamber, using information from the import-export data company Veritrade.
However, this volume is comparable to previous years such as 2023 (444,578 bags) and 2020 (442,128 bags), the coffee and cocoa chamber said, noting that those are preliminary figures.
In May, the Andean nation exported 100,313 bags of 60-kg, almost twice as much as the 52,068 bags in April.
Despite the decrease in volume, the accumulated FOB value stood at $175.8 million, a moderate 12% drop compared to 2024, reflecting the positive effect of high international prices.
The average FOB price of Peruvian coffee in May stood at US$ 342.22/quintal, consolidating its highest level of the year. “This value was supported by expectations of lower future supply in Brazil, affected by drought, and by robusta coffee exports from Vietnam, which have been declining due to the impact of weather and lower stocks. Likewise, a perception of global inventory shortages persists, reinforced by the low levels reported by ICE and the forecast of a global Arabica deficit for the 2025/26 season, estimated at -8.5 million bags, according to Volcafe,” the chamber added.
Between January and May 2025, the cumulative FOB value reached $175.8 million, a more moderate 12% decrease compared to the $199.9 million recorded between January and May 2024. This performance highlights the importance of rising prices in sustaining the sector's revenue, despite the lower export volume.
The United States continued to lead Peruvian coffee exports, with 122,832 bags shipped (27% of the total), generating revenue of $41.6 million. Germany followed with 71,746 bags (16%), reaching a value of $25.3 million. Canada remained in third place, with 56,926 bags (12%) and a turnover of $18.8 million.
Belgium ranked fourth, exporting 46,940 bags (10%) for a total of $16.6 million, while Mexico rounded out the top five with 41,838 bags (9%) and $11.7 million in sales. Together, these five destinations accounted for 74% of the total export volume and 67% of the revenue generated by Peruvian coffee during the period.
The average price per quintal during the first five months was $294, higher than the $155 recorded in the same period last year.
