Roughly one in eight Americans is now taking a GLP-1 weight loss medication, and the effects are traveling far beyond individual health decisions into the structure of the food industry itself. GLP-1 users are driving household purchasing decisions, changing what families eat, when they eat and how much product is consumed per sitting. Retailers are adjusting product placement, manufacturers are reformulating core ingredients, and agribusiness is beginning to feel the shift farther up the supply chain. Protein and nutrient-dense categories are gaining ground, while empty-calorie staples face a demand environment that has structurally changed.
Ben Klieve is a Senior Equity Research Analyst at Benchmark, covering food and agribusiness equities across the full length of the food chain, from farm inputs and animal protein to novel ingredients, specialty crops and better-for-you consumer packaged goods companies. As a Chartered Financial Analyst with prior senior research roles at Lake Street Capital Markets, National Securities and Noble Capital Markets, his coverage tracks the categories where GLP-1 adoption is creating the most visible demand divergence, including protein segments, dairy markets and insurgent consumer brands gaining velocity at the expense of legacy incumbents.
Key Themes from the Discussion
Roughly one in eight Americans takes a GLP-1 drug, influencing household food choices beyond individual users.
Protein, dairy and fiber-rich whole grains are gaining shelf velocity as GLP-1 users seek nutrient-dense, smaller-portion options.
Liquid milk consumption is showing early signs of per capita recovery after roughly 60 years of structural decline.
Protein Categories Gain Ground as GLP-1 Adoption Accelerates
GLP-1 drugs reduce total consumption but not evenly across categories. Users gravitate toward protein, fiber, and foods that sustain satiety in smaller portions, and that shift is registering simultaneously across dairy, animal proteins, functional foods and probiotic-rich fermented offerings. "Animal proteins, dairy, functional foods, probiotic-rich food like kefir and other fermented offerings, whole grains that are fiber rich and nutrient dense. Those are the categories that benefit the most." Beverage formats and protein-dense snacking are also gaining ground, and GLP-1 users develop more sensitive palates that steer them toward milder flavors, creating a surprising tailwind for categories as unlikely as soup.
Legacy Food Brands Lose Ground to Protein-Forward Insurgents
The center of the store is where the competitive pressure is most acute. Legacy food companies that built dominant positions in cereals, baked goods, pasta and snacks are contending with challenger brands that are reformulating those same categories around protein content and fiber density. Klieve points to pasta and mac and cheese as examples where insurgent labels have developed a taste profile that now competes with established names while meeting the nutritional requirements GLP-1 users are seeking. "The brands that are really innovating to disrupt legacy categories are really the ones that are faring quite well."
Agribusiness Inputs Shift as Protein Demand Moves Up the Supply Chain
The structural change visible in the grocery aisle is moving up the food supply chain. Klieve sees GLP-1 adoption as cementing the position of animal agriculture after several years of pressure on that sector, with dairy standing out as the sharpest leading indicator. "Dairy demand is actually improving for the first time in like 60 years," he notes, adding that liquid milk consumption is showing early signs of per capita recovery in the U.S. after roughly six decades of structural decline. On the plant-based side, he identifies an emerging opportunity in non-traditional specialty grains and novel proteins, as consumer packaged goods companies seek to differentiate from legacy soy and corn-derived ingredients and meet growing consumer preference for more varied protein sources.
