Rainfall In December Falls Across Colombia’s Coffee-Producing Provinces, La Niña to Last Until March

Bogota (Coffee Network ) -Colombia’s coffee plantations registered fewer rainfall in December compared to seasonal levels for previous months of December across the large majority of coffee-producing provinces, with the La Nina weather phenomenon likely ending in March.

Until the quarter January - March 2023, it is estimated that La Niña conditions will continue, with probabilities above 60%. As of the February - April 2023 quarter, there is a 70% probability that the neutral phase will dominate, according to the coffee research center Cenicafe.

In December, the volume of rain in the coffee stations in traditional provinces such as Antioquia, Cauca as well as in the Caribbean provinces were below seasonal historic averages, according to the coffee research center Cenicafe.

At the station El Rosario, in Antioquia, Colombia’s second-largest coffee- producing province, it rained less in December than on previous months of December.

It recorded 107mm of rainfall in December, compared with a historic average of 167mm.

The station El Tambo, in Cauca, the country’s third largest coffee-producing province, registered 216 mm in the previous month of December, down from a seasonal historic average of 262mn and much lower than the 460mm recorded in October, the rainiest month of the year

In the Huila province, the country’s largest coffee-producing province, the weather station Jorge Villamil recorded 72mm, compared with a historic average of 208mn. And much lower than the 148mm in October,

Rains in Colombia associated to the La Niña will continue until March when it merges with the first rainy season that runs between mid-March until June, the country’s weather office Ideam said.

For January 2023, rainfall is expected within the climatological averages recorded between 1991 and 2020. Historical climate of the month of January is characterized as being one of the months corresponding to the first "dry" period or with less rainfall of the year, particularly in a large part of the North, East and North Central regions of the coffee region. However, rainfall in January has been particularly strong across the nation. ON January 10, a massive landslide that destroyed at least 500 meters of the Pan American Highway that connects neighboring Ecuador with Pasto, the capital of Nariño and other important agricultural and industrial cities in the southwest, among them Popayán and Cali. The landslide is having a limited effect on coffee exports as Nariño and Cauca begin to collect beans in April.
