UPDATE: Colombia’s Coffee Growers Federation’ Manager Quits After President’s Request

((Adds comments from the director of Antioquia  coffee committee)

Coffee Network (Bogota) – The general manager of the Colombia’s coffee growers federation has quit as the country’s first leftist president Gustavo Petro requested his resignation.

“On Tuesday afternoon, I received a call from Gustao Petro's chief of staff, who told me that Petro wanted me to start a pre-election process for a new general manager,” Roberto Velez Vallejo told local radio station La W.

Velez was the general manager of the coffee growers federation since 2015 and his resignation happens while coffee growers hold its annual coffee summit.

"This step to the side opens a space so that, in harmony with the current government, the union continues working for the welfare of the 540,000 coffee-growing families in the country," he said in a statement posted on his Twitter account.

People familiar with the situation and coffee analysts said the government is deeply worried with the defaults of coffee contracts.

A source who declined to be named said coffee growers owes 50 million kilograms of coffee to the Coffee Fund worth more than US$100 million as mainly coffee growers breached contracts.

It is estimated that some 7,000 coffee growers have breached delivery contracts of coffee. In Colombia 540,000 families grow coffee.

Coffee analysts and experts said the request of President to choose a new general manager breaks the autonomy of the union to choose its general manager.

The news took by surpriseattendees to the 90th coffee summit.

"This came as a surprise at times that the results from the coffee sector are the best in history," Alvaro Jaramillo, director of the Antioquia coffee committee told Coffee Newtork in an interview. Antioquia is the second largest coffee-producing province contributing with 15% of total national output.

Three candidates shortlisted by the National Committee of Coffee Growers must be submitted to the consideration of the National Coffee Congress. One of them must have the express and favorable vote of the Minister of Finance, Guillermo Trujillo, a coffee expert, said.

"There is always a fear that the government's shortlisted candidates are not suitable to the union," Jaramillo added.

A coffee analyst said the sector is worried that the new post is taken by a politician who ignores the dynamism of the coffee sector as well as the financial sector.

“There is concern. This forces us to be vigilant of the selection process, who ideally must be a coffee grower. The coffee growers federation must be independent from the government but must have a good relationship with the government”, the former FNC worker said.

“The new general manager must come from the south of Colombia, from the departments of Huila, Cauca, Nariño or Tolima where the largest coffee production comes now. The correct selection is choosing a manager where the preponderance of production is based,” Trujillo added.

Finance Minister Jose Antonio Ocampo said on Wednesday, Colombia, the world's third largest coffee producer, decided to suspend the purchase of coffee for forward deliveries as a measure to prevent the unfulfillment of further contracts.

“Based on a series of analyzes carried out by the Federation and presented to the National Committee of Coffee Growers, it was decided to suspend the purchase (of coffee) for forward deliveries,” Ocampo said during the annual coffee summit held by the coffee growers federation.

That means the coffee growers federation no longer authorizes coffee cooperatives to engage in forward purchases of physical coffee due to the counterparty risk. Since 2003, the Federation has promoted the sale of coffee for future delivery among producers as an instrument to stabilize coffee income.

Velez is expected to hold a press conference at noon where he will reveal new details.
Petro is expected to address coffee growers during the 90th coffee summit today and FNC's offices are militarized implying that Petro will likely come despite yesterday he announced a medical condition.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
