Soybean Weekly Report

Weather in Argentina moves the soybean market

Ana Luiza Lodi

Despite good recent rains, soybean crops condition is very poor

Bearish drivers
  • World 2022/23 production estimated above consumption;
  • Fighting inflation can generate recession;
  • Possibility of still record production in Brazil;
  • COVID-19 rising in China and signs of economic slowdown.

Bullish drivers
  • Weather concerns for the 2022/23 crop in South America, already with production cuts in Brazil;
  • Relaxation of anti-COVID measures in China;
  • Crop failure in Argentina due to the weather;
  • Possibility of increased mandatory biodiesel blend in Brazil, from April 2023.

Soybean prices in Chicago started last week in decline, but reversed and ended the period in a positive field. The contract for March ended Friday (27) at 1509.5 cents per bushel, a slight increase of 0.2%.

Rainfall in Argentina on the weekend of January 21 and 22, in addition to the good forecasts for the next 10 days, weighed on soybean prices in the first trading sessions of the week. However, doubts about the regularity of the expected rains and the positive impacts on the country's crops gained ground again in the middle of the week, offering support to prices.

Last weekend (January 28 and 29), the northernmost regions of the provinces of Córdoba, Santa Fé and Entre Rios received good volumes of precipitation. Even so, the drier conditions in other areas of these provinces and also in Buenos Aires remain present. For this week, there are some lighter rains forecast for the country, but the weather should return to being predominantly dry. As more than 40% of Argentine crops are in the reproductive stages, according to the Buenos Aires Cereales Exchange, the weather will continue to be central to define the size of soybean production, in addition to influencing the movement in prices, since global supply is very much concentrated in Brazil, the US and Argentina.

In any case, although recent rains have been very welcome, as they decelerated the deterioration of the Argentine soybean crop, the general conditions are still poor. The good/excellent percentage rose from 3% to 7% in the latest follow-up by the Buenos Aires Exchange, but 54% of the plants are rate as poor/very poor, reinforcing doubts about how much these precipitations were able to reverse this season's drought.

In Brazil, 5.3% of soybeans have already been harvested, according to StoneX's report released last Friday (27), which was a weekly rise of 3 points. Compared to last year, fieldwork is behind last year by 12.1%, but this slower pace does not raise concerns for the time being. There have been rains in several parts of Brazil, but the heaviest volumes, which impact both the soybean crop and safrinha corn planting, were more concentrated in some areas.

Regarding demand, it should be noted that US export sales data referring to the week ended January 19 and released last Thursday (26) also contributed to the positive weekly closing of prices in Chicago, as 1.15 million tonnes of the 2022/23 crop were traded, a volume closer to the ceiling of estimates, which ranged from 600,000 to 1.2 million tonnes. Of this total, 940,000 tonnes were sold to China. In accumulated terms, sales of the current crop are at 46.5 million tonnes, above the 44.1 million recorded in the same period last year, with China being responsible for these stronger sales.

US soybean shipments reached 1.8 million tonnes in the same period, a volume below a week before, but above last year. These recent volumes have helped to reduce the difference in relation to the accumulated shipments registered until that same week of 2022. So far, 34.1 million tonnes of soybeans have been exported, against 35 million last year.

Next Wednesday (Feb 1st), StoneX will publish its update for the soybean and corn crop estimates in Brazil, and the weather will be key to define of the productive potential of the soybean crops planted later, as it happens in Rio Grande do Sul.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 6

August 6 – Stocks remain quietly mixed at midday as both the S&P 500 and Dow Jones remain just below their fresh all-time highs put in yesterday. This is allowing the VIX to cool to a four-week low below the 15.4 mark, reflecting the collective sigh of relief in the market amid largely better than expected U.S. economic data today. The dollar remains quietly in the green in its relatively tight range this week, trading at 99.9 at the time of writing. Treasuries remain elevated but have cooled from their recent peaks, with 30-year yields trading at 5.189%, 10-year yields trading at 4.647%, and 2-year yields trading at 4.229% at midday. Crude oil also remains quietly in the green, with nearby WTI up 2.3% on the day trading near $76.80 and nearby Brent up 2.4% on the day trading near $81.40. The ags remain mixed, with the wheat complex now squarely in the red while corn and soybeans cling to small gains, and the livestock complex largely pushes lower.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
