Soybean retreats in the week, without major threats to supply

Possibility of El Niño lowers drought risks in the US, Brazil, and Argentina

Bearish drivers
  • Estimated global production for 2022/23 above consumption, according to USDA;
  • Combating inflation may lead to a recession;

  • Possibility of an absolute production record in Brazil;

  • Signs of economic slowdown in China and and increased outbreaks of ASF;

  • Chances of El Niño increase.

Bullish drivers
  • Relaxation of anti-Covid measures in China;
  • Considerable crop losses in Argentina due to the climate;

  • US 23/24 crop area not expected to grow and stocks in March 1 indicate strong use;
  • Increase in mandatory biodiesel blending in Brazil, starting in April 2023.

Soybean prices in Chicago fluctuated between highs and lows in the previous week and ended the period in the negative field. The May/23 contract ended Friday (21) at 1483.5 cents/bushel.

A more sustained upward movement in prices continued to be limited by the increased availability of Brazilian soybeans, with the harvest of the record 2022/23 crop coming to an end, in addition to concerns on the demand side, amid weaker economic performance around the world.

According to StoneX, the harvest of the 2022/23 soybean crop in Brazil reached 91% by last Thursday (21), a situation that continues to weigh on national premiums, bearing in mind that sales are delayed and there are logistical issues, such as the lack of storage for this huge crop of 157.7 million tonnes (last StoneX estimate).

At the same time, Argentina continues to lose productive potential, with the Buenos Aires Exchange having cut the country's 2022/23 production to 22.5 million tonnes, as the harvest indicates lower yields.

Although Brazilian production is “compensating” for Argentine losses, there will be changes in soybean flows, with Argentina needing to import considerable volumes to feed its crushing industry.

Furthermore, when looking at the global balance, the 2022/23 ending stocks estimated by the USDA do not indicate a comfortable scenario, with the volume being in line with that registered in the last two cycles. It is also important to point out that the balance of supply and demand in the US is very restricted, with an estimated stocks/use ratio of 4.8%, remembering that the position of the country's stocks on March 1st was below average expectations.

Regarding US crop demand, the National Oilseed Processors Association (NOPA) reported a crush volume of 5.06 million tonnes in March, exceeding what the market expected and above last year. As for export sales, in the week ended April 13, 100,100 tonnes were traded, a volume below the estimate floor, with the accumulated result for the 2022/23 crop year reaching 50.4 million tonnes, with 4.5 million to reach the US export estimate, in addition to the need to ship the volumes sold until the end of August. So far, 46.3 million tonnes of US 2022/23 soybeans have been shipped.

Still speaking of demand, the pace of Chinese purchases/imports is closely monitored, since even with weakened Brazilian soybean premiums, China's crushing margins have been in the red. In addition, major outbreaks of African swine fever were recorded this year in the country, with prospects that meat production may be impacted mainly in the second half.

In addition to the oversupply in Brazil and the concerns on the demand side, there is the increasing possibility of El Niño occurrence, which increases the temperature of the Pacific waters, resulting in climate and atmospheric changes around the world.

The occurrence of El Niño during the summer in the Northern Hemisphere tends to favor the average productivity of soybeans in the US, with the potential to result in a large harvest, even with the initial perspectives of stability in planted area. This is because the weather phenomenon reduces the risk of prolonged droughts during the summer months in most of the grain belt, ensuring adequate rainfall for the development of the crop.

It should also be noted that towards the end of the year, El Niño tends to favor the Brazilian and Argentine crops. In general, the phenomenon results in more rainfall in the regions of Brazil that are the largest producers of soybean (in parts of the Center-West and in the South) throughout the summer cycle, ensuring sufficient moisture and avoiding localized droughts. However, depending on the intensity of the phenomenon, the rains may end up being excessive in Rio Grande do Sul, for example, and a point of attention is the lack of rain in the Northeast region.

In Argentina, the effects of El Niño are very similar to those in southern Brazil, with an abundance of rainfall during the development of the crop. As a result, the impacts on production tend to be very positive, leading to higher average productivity. On the other hand, it is also necessary to monitor the possibility of excessive rainfall, but, in general, the phenomenon tends to be beneficial for the soybean crop in the country.

As such, the market considers that soybeans face lower threats on the supply side at this time, while there are doubts about the performance of demand, a scenario that has weighed on prices and/or limited more significant increases.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 6

August 6 – Stocks remain quietly mixed at midday as both the S&P 500 and Dow Jones remain just below their fresh all-time highs put in yesterday. This is allowing the VIX to cool to a four-week low below the 15.4 mark, reflecting the collective sigh of relief in the market amid largely better than expected U.S. economic data today. The dollar remains quietly in the green in its relatively tight range this week, trading at 99.9 at the time of writing. Treasuries remain elevated but have cooled from their recent peaks, with 30-year yields trading at 5.189%, 10-year yields trading at 4.647%, and 2-year yields trading at 4.229% at midday. Crude oil also remains quietly in the green, with nearby WTI up 2.3% on the day trading near $76.80 and nearby Brent up 2.4% on the day trading near $81.40. The ags remain mixed, with the wheat complex now squarely in the red while corn and soybeans cling to small gains, and the livestock complex largely pushes lower.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
