The prevailing consensus on the Chair nominee holds that Kevin Warsh is an inflation hawk, that the Trump administration misjudged the pick, and that the Federal Reserve will turn less tolerant of easy money and inflation. We disagree with that framing.
Warsh does not fit the profile of a conventional inflation hawk. He operates as an interventionist hawk. He favors less balance-sheet activism, less forward guidance, fewer dot plots, less involvement with the markets. That distinction, rather than a simplistic hawk-versus-dove classification, drives the current market adjustment and frames the policy outlook more accurately.
The opening tape this morning reflected the inflation-hawk narrative. Equities declined across rate-sensitive and long-duration sectors, gold and silver sold off sharply as real yields rose and the dollar appreciated, and crypto traded lower as markets repriced liquidity assumptions.
