Torrential Rains in 2021 Derail Mitaca Crop of 2022 in Colombia

Coffee Network (Bogota)- Coffee growers and exporters in Colombia said the secondary crop, also known as mitaca, is coming reduced from previous years as torrential rains since August have not allowed the proper formation of flowerings.

Colombia, the world’s third-largest coffee exporter nation, picks the mitaca in January-June. The mitaca can weight up to 45% of the country’s total output in a calendar year.

Colombia has experienced torrential rains since August of last year. Colombia’s second rainy season usually runs between September and December but the rainy season began in August, and has not ended as the rainy season merged with the La Niña weather phenomenon. La Niña is expected to last until February 2022, according to the weather office Ideam.

Coffee growers and exporters said Colombia will find difficult to collect as much as the 6.15 million bags picked during the mitaca of 2020 as the rainy season was stronger and prevented flowerings to take place. In January-April Colombia picked 5.8 million bags, but the figure does not sum May-June’s production because Colombia endured a two-month national strike in May and June and production for those months are not available.

“Production for this year is complicated, because it rained throughout the whole of last year, particularly the last three months, was very rainy and the coffee plantations have not flowered,” said the coffee exporter and producer Nicolas Ossa.

The coffee growers federation said it will visit coffee farms in February where it will measure how much beans are located on coffee plants to establish the mitaca target.

The mid-crop is harvest in the departments of Antioquia, Risaralda, Caldas and Huila. In those departments, the mitaca is their secondary harvests.

In the southern provinces of Cauca, Nariño, and some parts of Huila, coffee growers pick their main harvest during January-June but those beans are counted as the country’s mitaca.

“Do not count on Antioquia because the mitaca is coming 90% reduced. It rained a lot last year, “ said coffee grower and exporter Juan Alvaro Arboleda.

Postponed Contracts

ASCAFE, an association that gathers some coffee cooperatives of the southern department of Cauca, including 17 cooperatives that gather ex combats, said lower output in 2021 and the default of coffee deliveries from some growers forced this coffee association to postpone 78% of coffee contracts of 2021 to 2022.

“The 78% of 2021 coffee contracts were moved to 2022 which is a very serious situation which have forced to renegotiate deliveries until 2022,” said Ascafe’s general manager, Carlos Lopez.

The systematic breach of coffee deliveries from growers, who failed to deliver beans in a set time, to take advantage of skyrocketing coffee prices, forced Ascafe to postpone the majority of  shipment of beans until 2022.

ASCAFE sells coffee to Illy Caffee and to an Australian buyer.

They had committed to sell beans at COP120,000 pesos per arroba, but failed to deliver the beans because they are receiving as much as PS240,000 pesos per arroba.
