Value of Colombia’s Coffee Harvest To Reach All- Time Record High In 2021

Coffee Network (Bogota) – Skyrocketing coffee prices will boost the value of the Colombia’s coffee harvest to a new record in history in 2021, deputy minister of finance Jesus Antonio Bejarano, said today during the coffee exporters summit Asoexport

The value of the coffee harvest will total COP12.8 trillion Colombian pesos (US$3.46 billion) in 2021. That compares with COP9.03 trillion in 2020 and COP7.2 trillion in 2019.

The value of the harvest is sharply higher than in previous years despite of falling output propelled by skyrocketing coffee prices.

Luis Carreño Pombo, president of the board of the  coffee exporters association  said coffee exporters have paid as much as COP2 million pesos ($526) per two bags of parchment coffee carrying 126kg.

The coffee growers federation, which sets coffee prices every day coffee prices, said the highest price of coffee paid on August 26. At that time, growers received as much as COP1.905 million pesos for two bags of parchment coffee. Coffee growers are pocketing strong profits as production costs for the same bags of coffee ranges between 850,000 and 950,000 pesos, although the costs of fertilizers have risen lately.

The general manager of the coffee growers federation Roberto Velez said higher income is in the growers’ pockets. In addition, rising income have allowed the more than 600 municipalities that produce coffee to bring economic prosperity to those regions

“That money is preventing coffee municipalities from falling in the economic pandemic. The coffee sector has been maintained thanks to coffee prices in a healthy way in their regions, coffee has been the engine in those municipalities,” Velez said.

The general manager of Colombia’s coffee growers federation Roberto Velez reiterated Colombia will produce around 13 million- 13.5 million bags in the calendar 2021 because coffee plantations have endured two years of strong rainfall associated with climate change.

Speaking at the Colombia’s coffee exporters association summit, Velez said, it has been raining “without mercy “for two years, and the rainfall regime in the central area has far exceeded the historical records of rainfall in those areas.

And Colombia’s coffee output in 2022 could face a similar threat because Colombia is experiencing a similar weather phenomenon associated with the arrival of La Niña in 2021.

This will be the first year in six consecutive years in which coffee output will be sharply below the 14 million bags.

Colombia, the world’s third largest coffee exporter, and one of the world’s largest producers of Arabica beans, produced 13.9 million bags last year. Production was above 14 million bags in the prior five years.
