Colombia’s Procafecol-Juan Valdez Stores Report Good Financial Results

Bogota (Coffee Network)- Procafecol, which owns Colombia’s coffee chain Juan Valdez, saw revenues jump 51% in the first quarter of the year, according to information provided by the company to the securities regulator.

Procafecol, owned by National Federation of Coffee Growers, reported revenues to COP170.65 billion($37.2 billion), up 51% from the Ps112.99 billion  million between January and March 2022.

According to the company, a good boost came from the 41.9% rise in sales, both in prices and quantity, in national product commercial channels. Procafecol explained that the sale grew supported not only in prices, but in number of transactions. Procafecol controls 547 stores of which 359 are located in Colombia.

The financial results were "leveraged by the increase in sell out sales and greater presence in points of sale (...) and the institutional channel that achieved an increase in profitability due to better prices and recoveries from corporate customers," the company explained in the report.

Its sales in the international channel also continued to grow, since exports had an increase of 61.3% compared to the same period in 2022. The international mass consumption grew 59% due to better depth in chains such as El Corte Inglés, Carrefour , Gurme, Walmart, Mahmoud Elfar, or HEB.

And another of the outstanding achievements is the progress in the opening plan that the brand has had in Turkey, the United States, Spain and Panama. Juan Valdez currently has a total of 188 stores abroad.

Profits benefited greatly, as they grew 209%, going from COP1.55 billion in the first three months of 2022 to generating COP4.82 billion in the first quarter 2023.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for July 29

July 29 – It’s Fed day, but the market is focused primarily on geopolitical escalations and concerns regarding the tech sector’s heavy AI spending, with stock futures pointing to a mixed open. The Nasdaq is looking to start the day in the green after seeing an ugly selloff that has pushed the index to near three-month lows this week. The VIX is in the green to start the day but remains relatively muted as it hovers near 18.7 at the time of writing. The dollar has traded both sides of unchanged overnight but is currently up very slightly on the day, reflecting cautious expectations of holding steady today but fearing a possible hike. Personally, I don’t expect Warsh’s first move at the helm to be a hike, especially following largely better-than-expected June inflation data, but unpredictability is likely the underlying concern. Treasuries are off from their recent peak but remain elevated, with 10-year yields trading above 4.62% and 2-year yields trading above 4.30% at the time of writing. Crude oil is up sharply, reversing course from the early week losses, with nearby WTI up 6.5% on the day to trade near $84.30 and nearby Brent up 5.6% to trade near $86.70 amid escalations in the Middle East that we’ll dive into below. The ags are largely mixed to start the day, with the biggest losses being seen in soybeans.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for July 28

July 28 – Stock futures were mixed to firmer overnight, as relative calm continues in the Middle East and as the Federal Open Market Committee begins two days of monetary policy discussion. The VIX is trading near 19, while the dollar index trades near 101.5. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.63%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.30%. WTI crude oil is trading near $81 per barrel after actually probing below $80 earlier in the session, while Brent trades near $87 per barrel. The grain and oilseed sector tried to bounce in the overnight session following yesterday’s active selloff, but it quickly succumbed to additional selling pressure as crude oil added to its losses, with the exception of corn that held modest gains based on tumbling crop ratings.
