Brazil's Agricultural Exports Set to Gain Ground as Trade Patterns Shift

Key takeaways

  • Brazil could capture a larger share of China's agricultural imports, potentially reaching 61% of global soybean exports by 2032
  • Export premiums and basis levels in Brazil are likely to strengthen as Chinese buyers seek alternatives
  • Market shifts extending beyond immediate policy changes point to lasting structural changes in grain trade

StoneX analyst Ana Luiza Lodi and Chief Commodities Economist Arlan Suderman see Brazil emerging as a primary beneficiary of changing global grain trade patterns. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Lodi pointed out that any decline in U.S. agricultural competitiveness would likely push Chinese buyers toward Brazilian markets, with ripple effects on pricing worldwide.

The stakes are substantial. Brazil, which first outpaced U.S. soybean production in 2012, has steadily expanded its agricultural footprint. Department of Agriculture data shows Brazilian farmers aren't likely to scale back once they've brought new land into production – even if market conditions shift again.

"China would aim to source as much as possible from Brazil, driving up demand and boosting export premiums/basis in Brazil, compared to Chicago," Lodi explained, highlighting how trade redirections could reshape pricing dynamics.

These changes could accelerate existing trends. Brazil is already on track to control nearly 61% of global soybean exports within the next eight years, according to USDA projections. But Suderman sees deeper forces at work than just short-term market reactions.

"Tariffs are certainly a part of the price equation," Suderman noted, "but the bottom line is that China is moving away from dependency on buying from the United States regardless, due to both geopolitical tensions and price."

Mexico, currently the leading buyer of U.S. corn, might also increase its focus on South American supplies. This potential shift in purchasing patterns could further reshape traditional trade flows in global grain markets.
