Weather Volatility Leads to Half-Century High in Coffee Prices
Key takeaways
- Coffee prices recently hit a 47-year high, up nearly 80 percent in 2024 alone
- Extreme weather in Brazil and Vietnam, both major coffee producers, have led to reduced supply
- Coffee bean stocks are at the lowest in around 20 years, according to Araujo
Tomas Araujo, Trading Associate with StoneX’s Coffee Team, was recently featured on NPR’s Marketplace, discussing the dramatic climb to 47-year high in coffee prices this year. This significant spike—nearly an 80 percent swell from the start of the year to the recent highs —was in large part caused by droughts in Brazil and heavy rains in Vietnam. Brazil and Vietnam produce more than 50% of the world’s coffee.
Meanwhile, as countries have attempted to deal with the volatile weather patterns, coffee roasted have maintained low prices by mixing low supplies with older stock. Araujo, however, noted this strategy has reached its limits.
“[W]e went into this year with the lowest stocks in around 20 years,” Araujo noted.
At early December high’s coffee prices are on the verge of record highs which were set back in April 1977. Before hitting that previous peak, futures prices rose more than fivefold when a climb began around June of 1975. With extremely low coffee bean stocks– and uncertain weather patterns influenced by climate change-- coffee prices could remain volatile and potentially seek out new record highs heading into 2025.
