Why the Front End Is the Treasury Sweet Spot

The U.S. Treasury market is pulling in two directions, with money markets absorbing record short-term supply while ten-year and 30-year auctions show signs of strain. Investors are also questioning how much weight to place on official data after a run of large payroll revisions and falling survey response rates. Against that backdrop, Bloomberg's The Opening Trade examined where the Federal Reserve goes next and how governments fund historic debt loads. Shriya Samarth, Executive Director and Head of Rates, EMEA at StoneX, joined the programme to explain why the front end has become the funding sweet spot and why central bank flexibility is coming at the cost of higher yields.

Key Takeaways

  • U.S. CPI, PPI and retail sales data collectively priced out a December Federal Reserve rate hike for the first time since May.
  • The U.S. Treasury has issued $827 billion of net Treasury bills, more than double the 2025 slate, and money markets are absorbing the supply.
  • Central banks worldwide are prioritizing flexibility amid uncertainty, and that flexibility is coming at the cost of higher yields.

Record Bill Issuance Finds Buyers as Long Bonds Struggle

The U.S. Treasury has leaned heavily into short-term funding, with Samarth pointing to $827 billion of net Treasury bill issuance, more than double the 2025 slate. Demand for that supply has held up, evidenced by solid interest at the three-year U.S. Treasury auction, whereas the ten-year and 30-year auctions both tailed last week.

"So perhaps the front end is the sweet spot for now," Samarth said, though she flagged tepid demand at recent bill auctions as a trend worth watching. She argued the strategy makes sense for governments seeking flexible funding and cheaper borrowing while a reckoning plays out at the long end.

More broadly, Samarth cautioned that "central banks just need flexibility right now to deal with the situation. And unfortunately that's coming at the cost of higher yields."
