James Carr, StoneX Director of West Coast Dairy, outlines how inflation and shifting breeding decisions are transforming livestock economics in the United States.
“Everything is is exponentially more expensive than, we were four years ago.” Carr lists labor, insurance, parts and construction among the inputs squeezing producers. Those costs heighten volatility and make every efficiency gain critical for survival in both dairy and beef sectors.
”About 60% of that herd is being impregnated to beef.” With sexed-semen technology, dairies selectively breed only the best 30-35% of cows for heifer replacements and channel the remainder to beef crosses. The predictable calf crop improves management but sharply reduces the number of heifers entering the national market, tightening supply and supporting dairy prices.
“It’s nearly as expensive to feed a family of four at a fast food restaurant right now as it is to go to a casual dining restaurant.” High beef prices and broader food inflation encourage households to cut the frequency of QSR visits in favor of fewer, potentially better, dining experiences. Carr describes beef becoming a “luxury item,” altering demand patterns across the protein complex.
“We can go into the dairy aisle and grab a high protein dairy drink.” Even as total dairy consumption holds steady, shoppers shift toward yogurt, cheese and fortified drinks that deliver more protein per calorie. Carr sees this as part of a broader move toward “quality calories,” a trend likely to persist if beef remains expensive.
