Fernando Maximiliano, StoneX Brazil Market Intelligence Analyst, examines how new US tariffs on coffee imports intersect with low global stocks and Brazilian weather risks to influence trade flows and consumer prices.
US coffee inflation has been moving higher even as some regions saw brief relief earlier in the year. Maximiliano noted that roasted and ground coffee inflation in the US was above 33 percent, which he described as the highest value in the data series, and said it is expected to continue rising if tariffs remain in place. “The US is still on the rise. And we expect that, these tariffs will continue to add more pressure on this inflation”.
Global stocks remain low, a condition that previously drove prices to historical highs early in the year. The Brazilian harvest provided short-term relief between May and July but did not resolve the underlying stock problem. Arabica production in Brazil is lower than earlier estimates and recent frost added uncertainty. “We even did the, survey in the area. We estimated that the losses around 425,000 bags… But it could be it could be even higher”.
Tariffs are likely to prompt a reallocation of flows. The US may seek supplies from Colombia, Honduras and Guatemala, while Brazil redirects volumes to markets those origins leave open. Maximiliano stressed this is a rebalancing rather than new market creation. “It’s not opening up new markets… it’s a change in volumes and routes”.
Industry groups in Brazil and the US are advocating for coffee to be excluded from tariff measures. Maximiliano referenced employment and domestic value creation tied to coffee in the US. “According to the National Coffee Association… each dollar is spent on imports of coffee creates $43 within the American industry”.
