Corn Exports Surge, 25M Bushels Sold | USDA Flash Sales, Global Demand & Harvest Outlook

Arlan Suderman, StoneX Chief Commodities Economist, outlines why US corn exports are accelerating and what shrinking crop estimates mean for agriculture markets.

Key Takeaways

  • USDA flash sales confirm 25M bushels of corn exports
  • Global demand outpaces supply as crop estimates shrink
  • Argentina export tax shift pressures soybean and corn trade

USDA Flash Sales Boost Corn Exports

Suderman explained that in just three business days, over 25 million bushels of US corn were sold through USDA flash sales to Mexico and other buyers. “Over the last three business days, we've had announcements from USDA in their flash reporting system of over 25 million bushels of corn being sold”. He noted that unknown destinations often turn out to be Mexico, highlighting strong nearby demand.

Global Demand Tightens Corn Supply

Over the past decade, global corn demand has consistently outpaced production, tightening supply balances. Suderman pointed out that global corn surplus stocks have fallen from 32 percent of usage to below 22 percent. “Ten years ago, we saw the world surplus supplies of corn at nearly a third of annual usage... now, it's dropping below 22%”. This trend underpins ongoing pressure on US supply.

Harvest Yields Show High Variability

Harvest results across the Midwest have varied widely, with some fields showing strong yields while others disappointed. Suderman observed that weather and disease stress are shrinking seed size and lowering yields. “It's very difficult to detect visually a seed that's 5% smaller... but when harvested, you have a 5% lower yield”. He expects national yield estimates to move lower as harvest progresses.

Argentina Policy Adds Market Pressure

Argentina suspended export taxes to raise foreign exchange reserves, making its soybeans and corn more competitive. Suderman explained this reduces Argentine soybean prices by about $3 a bushel and corn by 50 cents, challenging US exports. “This is expected to create a surge of export supplies of soybeans, soy oil, soy meal, corn, and wheat”. This new competition weighs on markets alongside US demand strength.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
