As global oil markets adjust to higher output and uneven demand, the balance between supply growth and consumption has entered a new phase. Rising OPEC production, coupled with fresh barrels from emerging producers, is reshaping expectations for prices through 2026. This shift signals a market that may stay well supplied even as geopolitical risks persist.
Bruno Santos, Market Intelligence Analyst at StoneX Brazil, examines the implications of OPEC’s evolving production strategy for global oil supply, market balance, and investor sentiment.
Key Themes from the Discussion
OPEC has accelerated its production limits to expand market share in Asia.
Non-OPEC producers like Brazil, Canada, and Guyana are driving additional supply growth.
Weaker demand in Europe and Japan offsets stronger consumption in China and India.
Since April 2025, OPEC has increased its production quotas by about 2.7 million barrels per day, aiming to strengthen its presence in key Asian markets. Santos noted that the group is “trying to expand their market share mainly on Asia, on important consumers such as India and China”. He added that while not all the announced volume is reaching the market, expectations remain high that a significant share will be realized. This strategy, while boosting revenues, has also reinforced a bearish tone among investors.
Non-OPEC Producers Add to the Glut
Beyond OPEC, supply growth from Brazil, Canada, and Guyana is intensifying pressure on global balances. Santos observed that “those three countries specifically are driving global crude oil production growth”. The International Energy Agency expects these producers to lift output by roughly 1.4 million barrels per day in 2025 and another 1 million in 2026. With demand growth slowing and inventories rising, these combined forces could keep prices under strain well into next year.
