How Brazil’s Corn Market Is Transforming Fast

Brazil’s corn industry is evolving at record speed, driven by expanding ethanol production, shifting export flows, and sustained high yields. This transformation is changing the balance of domestic demand and influencing international trade dynamics. For global buyers, understanding Brazil’s next moves has become essential to navigating supply and price volatility.

Raphael Bulascoschi, Market Intelligence Analyst at StoneX Brazil explains how Brazil’s corn sector is evolving, driven by booming ethanol demand and changing trade dynamics.

Key Themes from the Discussion

  • Record corn harvests in Brazil are reshaping trade and pricing structures.
  • Rapid ethanol industry growth is absorbing more domestic corn supply.
  • A stronger real and lower global prices are reducing export competitiveness.

Brazil’s Corn Market Gains Global Influence

Brazil’s corn production reached around 140 million tons in 2025, marking another record year. Yet, despite the abundance, exports have slowed due to currency strength and lower international prices. As Bulascoschi explained, “Brazilian exports have slowed mainly because of a stronger real and lower international prices”. At the same time, new sources of domestic demand are emerging as ethanol plants absorb a larger share of local corn supply.

Ethanol Growth Turns Corn Into Fuel Demand

The growth of corn-based ethanol has become a defining force in Brazil’s market. Bulascoschi noted that the sector’s consumption is expected to climb from 22.3 million tons in 2025 to 28.3 million tons in 2026, a 27% increase in just one year. He emphasized, “This growth of 6 million tons shows the size of this demand for corn”. With blending mandates and new production capacity expanding rapidly, ethanol is creating a steady floor for corn demand that reshapes the traditional export-dependent model.

Brazil’s Corn Market Comes of Age

While domestic consumption grows, Brazil’s influence on global corn markets is deepening. The country’s ability to sustain high yields and flexible export logistics positions it as a critical supplier alongside the United States. Bulascoschi pointed out that “high domestic corn prices should continue to encourage farmers to expand acreage”, suggesting continued investment and resilience. This transformation cements Brazil’s role as a central player in the global grain economy, balancing local demand with international opportunity.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
