The Dow Jones Industrial Average has fallen to five-month lows and is approaching oversold levels last seen in March, as Treasury yields near their highest since 2001 weigh on cyclical sectors. The Dow Jones is oversold because elevated bond yields are hitting cyclical stocks harder than the AI and tech names that keep the Nasdaq in overbought territory. With tech running hot and blue chips running cold, the gap between the two major U.S. indices is now one of the clearest divergences in the U.S. equity market. Renewed U.S.-Iran tensions and a rebound in crude oil prices add inflation pressure to that backdrop.
Razan Hilal, StoneX Media Market Analyst and a Chartered Market Technician, has spent seven years analyzing forex, stocks, commodities and equity indices. Her work centers on technical and intermarket analysis, tracking how moves in Treasury yields and crude oil carry through to momentum across U.S. equity indices.

Treasury Yields Weigh More Heavily on Dow Jones Cyclicals Than Tech
"Unlike the resilience seen across the AI and tech stocks," Hilal observes, "the elevated bond yield environment seems to weigh more heavily on the Dow Jones chart and cyclical sectors". Elevated Treasury yields are hitting the Dow Jones Industrial Average harder than the tech-heavy Nasdaq, pushing the blue-chip index to price levels last seen in June. The 10-year Treasury yield is testing highs last seen in 2001, along with a long-standing historical barrier that has served as both support and resistance on its chart. For Dow Jones traders, the result is a market where higher yields are not landing evenly across U.S. sectors.
Dow Jones Oversold Readings Contrast With an Overbought Nasdaq
The Dow Jones is approaching oversold conditions on the Relative Strength Index, in contrast to the overbought readings that still sit on the Nasdaq. According to Hilal, the Dow Jones now shows "relative oversold conditions seen on the Dow Jones chart approaching levels last seen in March". Even so, the Dow Jones oversold reading has not yet reached the extreme set in March, so the index has some room to go before it matches that low point. As a result, the two benchmarks are moving through opposite ends of the same momentum gauge, with cyclical stocks absorbing the pressure that tech has so far avoided.
Sector Rotation Signals Build as Momentum Splits Across U.S. Indices
Sector rotation signals are building across U.S. equity indices as overbought tech and an oversold Dow Jones pull in opposite directions. The Nasdaq remains within a bullish zone despite its overbought conditions, whereas the Dow Jones and cyclical sectors carry the weight of elevated bond yields. Hilal frames the divergence as "potential sector rotation here with overbought risk on the Nasdaq, oversold risks on the Dow Jones chart". That leaves the next move in the Dow Jones to be confirmed by price rather than assumed, and the same applies to the Nasdaq. "Price action confirming the price direction level by level would likely be the best way to go," Hilal says.
