Treasury Yields Are Giving Investors a Safer Exit From the AI Trade

By: James Stanley, Sr. Strategist

Nvidia printed a weekly bearish engulfing candle despite a major buyback announcement, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 sitting at fresh all-time highs. Rising Treasury yields weigh on AI stocks in two ways, by raising borrowing costs for debt-dependent tech firms and by giving investors a lower-risk home for capital that would otherwise chase another tech rally. That second channel is the one gaining weight, as long-dated government bonds start to look like a genuine rival to stretched AI valuations. The pressure is building quietly beneath record highs, not in the headlines.

James Stanley, StoneX Media Senior Market Analyst, has spent more than two decades working across equities, options, fixed income and foreign exchange, with a focus on price action and macroeconomics. His coverage follows how moves in bond yields, equity indices and commodities feed into one another over event-driven time frames of two days to two weeks.

Key Themes

  • Nvidia printed a weekly bearish engulfing candle despite a major buyback and strong quarterly earnings.
  • Higher Treasury yields can reflect stronger growth and inflation rather than a bearish signal for stocks.
  • Long-dated Treasuries offer capital a lower-risk alternative to stretched AI stocks.

Treasury Yields Climb on Growth and Inflation, Not Panic

Higher Treasury yields do not automatically spell trouble for stocks, despite the market reflex formed after the global financial crisis when government bond buying held yields artificially low. "When you have a high growth backdrop, you're going to have higher levels of inflation. It's just a byproduct," Stanley says, and higher inflation leaves investors with less reason to hold bonds at current yields. Read that way, rising Treasury yields signal acceptance of higher long-term growth rates rather than a warning. The limit arrives when borrowing costs climb far enough that companies struggle to access debt markets.

AI Hyperscalers Carry the Highest Exposure to Rising Borrowing Costs

Unprofitable AI hyperscalers that rely on debt markets are the part of the AI trade most exposed to rising Treasury yields. Low rates direct capital toward higher-beta, riskier technology names, and higher rates reverse that pull. According to Stanley, "these hyperscalers that are dependent on debt markets that aren't profitable, that need to bring in capital, they are, in essence vulnerable to this higher rate backdrop." Developers with deeper resources can absorb higher costs for a while, whereas companies that have tapped debt markets for years see each new round of borrowing add to a heavier debt load.

Long-Dated Treasuries Challenge the AI Bubble as Nvidia Stalls

Long-dated Treasuries become a direct rival to the AI trade once investors can lock in a 30-year coupon instead of bidding the next dip in Nvidia. Nvidia is already stuttering at its highs, with its buyback announcement producing only a marginal new high before what Stanley calls "pretty fervent profit taking" by long-term holders. A credible alternative for capital flows, rather than bad news, is what typically drains a crowded trade, and bonds offer that alternative with lower risk. As Stanley puts it, "If you are looking for the bubble bursting, that bearish engulfing Nvidia is probably about the best thing that you got to work with at this point."
