Trump’s Strategy Fuels Uncertainty and What It Means for Rates, Consumers and Corn Yields

Arlan Suderman, Chief Commodities Economist at StoneX, shares how Trump’s evolving strategy is influencing market expectations, consumer decisions, and agricultural forecasts.

Key Takeaways

  • Market volatility rises on jobs data revisions and policy uncertainty
  • Trump’s approach amplifies unpredictability for consumers and businesses
  • StoneX crop surveys signal higher corn yields than USDA estimates

Market Volatility Follows Jobs Data and Policy Moves

Suderman notes that recent jobs data triggered a sharp reaction in equity markets: “The stock market fell sharply on Friday following that jobs report”. Revised employment numbers, more than disappointing new figures, drove market expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts, with “an overwhelming expectation that we’ll see a rate cut in September and expectations now that we’ll see three rate cuts…by the end of the year”. Markets quickly recalibrated, showing the sensitivity to both data and policy signals.

Trump’s Strategy Creates Ongoing Uncertainty

Trump’s second term has been defined by unpredictability and rapid changes. Suderman explains, “Time is of the essence and to keep the other side guessing what his next move would be”. This tactic aims to surprise both political opponents and international negotiators. However, Suderman points out, “that same uncertainty would also negatively impact both consumers and businesses”, with ripple effects beyond political objectives.

Impact on Consumer and Business Sentiment

The uncertain environment has prompted consumers and businesses to become more cautious. “Expansion plans are put on hold with a focus on reducing fixed costs”, while consumers delay major purchases. Even as markets adjust to new tariffs, Suderman observes, “the greatest obstacle to unleashing the consumer, to unleashing the labor market and business expansion is the ongoing uncertainty”. He suggests that resolving key issues early could help restore confidence ahead of the midterm elections.

Crop Yield Surveys Signal Upside Potential

Suderman turns to agriculture, reporting that StoneX customer surveys estimate higher corn yields than current USDA projections: “Stone X’s survey put the corn crop at 188.1 bushels per acre. USDA’s yield estimate is currently at 181 bushels per acre”. NDVI satellite data supports these findings, but upcoming crop tours will provide crucial confirmation. “The next step is to monitor the grainfill…That’s going to continue to be the debate”, as markets await clarity on actual yields later this season.
