Biofuels and Dollar Weakness Drive Corn and Soybean Momentum
Bertrand Oesterle, StoneX VP of Clearing and Execution Sales, explains why USDA data turned bearish but grains found support in biofuels, currency shifts and trade talks.

USDA Data Turns Bearish Despite Lower Yields
The USDA cut yield estimates slightly but raised harvested acreage, leading to higher corn and soybean production. Bertrand Oesterle noted this made the report bearish despite initial market expectations. “We lower the yields a little bit. We increase the area. We end up with a bigger production in the end”.
Biofuel Mandates Emerge as Key Demand Driver
The Renewable Fuels Association called for wider E15 blending, while the EPA suggested reallocating refinery exemptions to blending obligations. Both measures would support domestic demand for corn and soybeans through biofuels. Oesterle emphasized that record domestic figures already showed strong consumption trends.
Weaker Dollar and China Talks Fuel Market Hopes
A weaker U.S. dollar, driven by expected Fed rate cuts, has made exports more competitive. This supported prices in Chicago markets. Meanwhile, U.S.-China talks raised hopes of commodity commitments, with the market eyeing whether China would resume U.S. agricultural purchases. “The market is expecting a trade deal in some form”.
South America Supply and Europe’s Currency Challenge
Large South American crop estimates added downside risk, though potential La Niña weather could alter those forecasts. In Europe, rapeseed and wheat markets rallied, partly tied to Canadian canola prospects and Ukrainian drought, but gains were capped by euro strength. Oesterle observed that speculators remain heavily short, though signs of short covering may be emerging.
