ASX 200 futures are stuck in a daily downtrend, with choppy price action near resistance and a bearish pin bar taking shape as global markets weigh the risk of a hawkish Federal Reserve. That combination matters for anyone trading Australian equities, because a messy chart beneath resistance leaves the ASX 200 exposed if risk appetite turns. The backdrop at home is hardly calm either, with hotter Australian inflation data pushing rates markets to price in a Reserve Bank of Australia rate hike. For traders, the ASX 200 now sits where a fragile technical setup meets two hawkish central banks.

ASX 200 Futures Hold a Daily Downtrend Beneath Resistance
ASX 200 futures remain locked in a daily downtrend, and price action since that downtrend took hold has been anything but clean. Simpson follows the Australian benchmark through the SPI 200 futures market, and the ASX 200 chart tells a story of hesitation rather than conviction. "We've got a decent downtrend on daily charts. And since then price action has been very, very messy around current prices," he says. Notably, the ASX 200 futures daily candle is on track for a bearish pin bar beneath resistance, a candle shape with a prominent upper wick sitting just below that ceiling. For self-directed traders, that matters because choppy trading inside a broader downtrend makes it harder to separate a genuine turn in the ASX 200 from noise. As a result, resistance on the ASX 200 futures chart has become the area that defines whether the downtrend stays intact.
Federal Reserve Risk Spills Toward the ASX 200 and Global Stocks
Federal Reserve policy is the outside risk hanging over the ASX 200, since a hawkish decision from the U.S. central bank can ripple through global stock markets and spill over into Australian equities. That spillover matters because ASX 200 futures are already sitting in a daily downtrend, leaving little cushion if global risk appetite fades. Beyond that, ASX 200 price action stays messy, so the Federal Reserve decision carries extra weight for the index. The Federal Reserve is also front of mind for the Australian dollar, where hotter domestic inflation has pushed rates markets toward pricing a Reserve Bank of Australia hike. According to Simpson, that leaves markets weighing a notable overlap, "you've got two hawkish central banks with similar levels of interest rates."
