Brazil's corn ethanol expansion is producing more distillers grains, and China's growing appetite for the feed has turned an ethanol co-product into an export story. Even so, the Brazil distillers grains market runs on regional logistics rather than national export totals, because DG availability and price are set close to the ethanol plants that produce it. That matters for cattle producers who rely on DG in their rations, and for ethanol producers who need DG to stay competitive at home. Strong export volumes alone say little about the supply that feed buyers near the plants actually face.
Larissa Alvarez, Senior Market Intelligence Analyst at StoneX, holds a Ph.D. and brings a background in economic research to her coverage of grain, oilseed and protein markets across South America. Based in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, she follows South American crop markets alongside Brazilian livestock trends, the two sides of the trade that distillers grains connect.

Brazil's DG Prices Depend on Logistics Around Mato Grosso Ethanol Plants
Brazil's distillers grains market is highly regional, with logistics and proximity to ethanol plants deciding how much DG reaches local cattle buyers and at what price. Mato Grosso accounts for the majority of Brazil's corn ethanol production, and Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás are also key producing regions, making all three natural markets to watch for local DG supply and livestock demand. According to Alvarez, "export volumes can increase very quickly, but that alone doesn't tell us that the domestic market is becoming tight". For cattle producers in Brazil's ethanol belt, conditions near the plants matter as much to DG costs as headline export numbers do.
Corn Ethanol Growth Absorbs China's Demand for Brazilian DG
"Exports are growing at the same time as Brazilian supply, because Brazil is processing more corn into ethanol, and more ethanol production naturally means more DG being produced," Alvarez explains. Brazilian DG exports have climbed on Chinese buying, yet extra corn ethanol output has largely offset the export pull on domestic DG supply. Even during very strong export demand, DG prices have firmed and then eased rather than climbing steadily. For Brazil's cattle feeders, rising Chinese demand has not translated into sustained upward pressure on DG costs.
DG to Corn Price Relationship Tracks Brazil's Supply Against Export Demand
The DG to corn price relationship is a key signal of how well Brazil's growing corn ethanol output is meeting both export and livestock demand for distillers grains. Production, exports and relative prices need to be read together, since cattle producers weigh DG against corn and soybean meal when building rations. When exports rise and DG stays competitive against corn, ethanol production is adding enough supply to help balance the Brazilian DG market. "For me, one of the most useful indicators," Alvarez says, "is the DG to corn price relationship."
