El Niño crop fears tend to run well ahead of the harvest data, and markets often price the worst case long before the facts arrive. The pattern matters because El Niño reaches far beyond one region, touching wheat in Australia, maize in Europe and soybeans and corn in Brazil. Commercial buyers and hedgers who can tell an El Niño scare story from a measurable crop loss are better placed to read the supply picture as it develops.
Bertrand Oesterle, StoneX VP of Clearing & Execution Sales, has followed grains and oilseeds markets for 20 years, tracking crop cycles, production estimates and supply flows across major producing regions. His coverage spans the weather, logistics and harvest data that shape global agricultural supply, which places El Niño and its effect on crop estimates firmly within the markets he monitors.
Key Themes from the Discussion
The probability of El Niño has climbed from 40% to 90% since June, yet its timing remains disputed.
Early talk of a 50% drop in Australia's wheat crop has given way to estimates near 30 to 31 million tonnes.
Brazil soybean and corn estimates still point to records despite comparisons with the 1997-98 El Niño.

El Niño Perception Shifts From Fear to Facts as Probability Climbs
El Niño risk has grown from a 40% probability to 90% since June, and market perception of El Niño has shifted at each step. Early El Niño headlines tend to center on worst-case crop scenarios, long before harvest data can confirm or dismiss them. According to Oesterle, "that dynamic perception element goes from fear to facts. And Australia is a very good example of that fear to fact." For commercial participants, the early phase of an El Niño is consequently driven more by fear than by crop data, which only catches up as harvests arrive.
Australia's Wheat Crop Defies Early El Niño Disaster Fears
Australia's wheat crop shows how far El Niño fear can run ahead of the facts, with early talk of a 50% drop in production from 35 to 17.5 million tonnes. Estimates later settled between 25 and 31 million tonnes, and Oesterle says StoneX colleagues in Australia report that "we had good rain at the start of the season" before farmers applied fertilizer. The harvest runs from October to December, and market estimates now sit around 30 to 31 million tonnes. Unlike the early fears, a crop disaster in Australia has been avoided so far, a reminder that El Niño scare stories need testing against data as it arrives.
Brazil Crop Estimates Hold Near Records Despite El Niño Alarm
Brazil soybean and corn estimates still point to record crops, despite comparisons between this El Niño and the 1997-98 event. Those comparisons are hard to apply because Brazil's crops were 30 to 35 million tonnes at the time, a fraction of current production. For buyers with exposure to South American supply, the gap between alarmist scenarios and current estimates is the fear-to-facts cycle playing out in real time. "It becomes very difficult because you have on the one side the alarmists saying that it could be a disaster," Oesterle says.
