The U.S. dollar index has climbed to fresh 2026 highs, yet GBP/USD consolidation has held firm, with the British pound still trading inside a sideways, contracting range that has defined the pair since November 2025. That GBP/USD consolidation has now run for 11 months, absorbing dollar strength without a breakdown. The range itself, rather than dollar momentum alone, has become the structure that frames the British pound's next directional move. Momentum readings across the dollar, the euro and sterling add weight to that structure.

Sterling's Contracting Range Absorbs the Dollar Index Surge
The British pound has held a sideways, contracting consolidation on the GBP/USD weekly chart since November 2025, even as the U.S. dollar index pushed to fresh 2026 highs. "Despite the latest surge in the U.S. dollar index to fresh 2026 highs, the British pound held its grounds within the bounds of a sideways consolidation in place since November 2025," Hilal says. The weekly RSI on GBP/USD briefly slipped below its own sideways range before tracing a recovery back inside it, mirroring the price structure. For traders, the contracting shape means the GBP/USD consolidation is tightening rather than drifting, which concentrates the significance of any eventual exit.
GBP/USD Range Exits Open Opposite Paths for the British Pound
GBP/USD daily RSI is rebounding from oversold levels last seen in November 2025, and according to Hilal, that move is "raising the significance of a potential near-term, short-term rebound for the British pound pair". EUR/USD is tracing a similar rebound from oversold RSI conditions last seen in 2015, whereas the U.S. dollar index sits at overbought daily conditions last seen in 2023, a combination that opens a path for a dollar pullback. Above the range, Fibonacci extensions of the wave from the June 2026 low map staged resistance up to the upper bound of the British pound's consolidation, and a sustained breakout beyond it would open longer-term upside risks for GBP/USD. Conversely, a sustained breakdown through support would mark a steep breakdown scenario for the pair, with the November 2025 lows and the area that held in April 2025 as the next reference points. Hilal frames the 11-month range as the deciding structure, observing that it "is expected to define the next major directional scenarios for the pair".
