FX Weekly Overview (Brazil Issue)
Dollar to reflect US economic data, Central Bank minutes, inflation in Brazil, and the Middle East

By: Matt Simpson, Market Analyst
Seasonal behaviour within currency markets becomes most visible when large datasets reveal recurring patterns rather than short term noise. December stands out as a month in which the dollar has repeatedly shown weakness, with market structure and positioning contributing to a predictable late year profile. Traders who recognise these patterns often adjust expectations ahead of year end shifts in liquidity and risk appetite. As seasonal tendencies concentrate into specific days, currency dynamics take on a more defined rhythm that shapes opportunity for FX participants.
Matt Simpson, FOREX.com Market Analyst, uses long term seasonality data to highlight how the dollar weakens into year end and which FX majors historically benefit.
Seasonality becomes meaningful when median and average returns align closely, as it suggests stability rather than distortion. Simpson notes that December shows a win rate just below 34%, with the dollar “closing lower around 64% of the time,” which conveys a strong behavioral tendency. He also highlights that down months produce an average loss of 2.2%, making this pattern more substantial than a simple monthly bias. These figures underscore how cumulative positioning, year-end flows and risk management behaviors interact to create a repeatable cycle in dollar performance.
Seasonal softness in the dollar does not affect all major currencies equally, and historical data reveals clear differentiation in outcomes. Simpson emphasizes that the Swiss franc often leads performance with USDCHF delivering an average return of -1.3% in December, while the EURUSD follows with an average gain of 1.2%. He also highlights that NZDUSD offers a distinctive profile by combining more modest returns with a notably high win rate of 66%, which points to steadier relative strength. These dynamics show how traders can interpret seasonal pressure not only through dollar weakness but also by identifying the pairs most likely to respond consistently.

Dollar to reflect US economic data, Central Bank minutes, inflation in Brazil, and the Middle East

US indices have led sentiment to fresh highs this past week even as the fundamental backdrop struggles to present a solid foothold. Will thin liquidity aid or hamper the swell and what does the event risk ahead propose?

A softer run of U.S. data is doing more to move the U.S. dollar than any chart, with a jobs report and an inflation print set to land back to back. A cooler U.S. CPI report would hand the Federal Reserve room to ease, and that prospect is already loosening the dollar's grip.
