Will Reciprocal Tariffs Bring Recession and Diversification Away from the Dollar?

FOREX.com Analyst David Scutt joined Fiona Cincotta for a deep dive into how sweeping US tariff measures may spark global recession fears and encourage a move away from the dollar.

Key Takeaways:

  • Tariffs hit major US trading partners harder than expected
  • China may respond with stimulus to offset weakening demand
  • Uncertainty could spur nations to reduce reliance on the dollar

Liberation Day Tariffs Overview

President Trump’s sudden move to impose blanket tariffs, including a 10% universal rate followed by higher levies on 60 nations, has surprised market analysts worldwide. Scutt notes that the sheer scale of these measures marks the most significant US tariff increases in over a century, impacting both established and emerging economies.

Negotiation Versus Escalation

While the White House may ultimately seek to negotiate better trade terms, Scutt believes that the accelerated timetable—April 9th for higher tariffs to take effect—leaves limited room for calm discussions. He suspects that if no middle ground is found swiftly, escalating tariffs will significantly affect global supply chains and trade flows.

The Impact on Global Demand

A core concern is the US consumer’s critical role in international trade. Scutt notes that with import costs rising sharply, purchasing power and overall demand may contract, threatening corporate earnings and prompting businesses to delay or reduce investment. This downturn in consumption could ripple through multiple industries and trading blocs.

China’s Position on Tariffs

China, already grappling with a slowing economy, faces a 54% tariff on its goods entering the United States—far higher than many expected. Excess industrial capacity in Asia, according to Scutt, which once found an outlet in US markets, now risks going underutilized. He adds that the pressure to deploy domestic stimulus could intensify, as Beijing seeks to maintain growth and avert widespread job losses.

Prospects of a Global Downturn

Higher tariffs and disrupted trade routes raise the likelihood of a worldwide economic slump. Regional economies counting on robust US demand may be forced to introduce stimulus measures to shore up consumer spending. Without such fiscal support, Scutt believes that many countries could see faster-than-anticipated slowdowns, possibly pushing some into recessionary territory.

Potential Shift Away from the Dollar

The return of heavy tariffs and unpredictable policy shifts may encourage countries to diversify their reserves away from the US dollar. While no clear single currency replacement has emerged, and none have appeared on the horizon, Scutt notes that an increasing preference for gold and regional trade agreements suggests nations are reassessing their dependence on the dollar’s dominance.
