Fertilizer Markets Rattle as Iran-Israel Tensions Escalate

Rising geopolitical instability is reshaping global fertilizer markets, as Josh Linville, Vice President of Fertilizer at StoneX, explains in this timely interview.

Key Takeaways

  • Middle East tensions have put key nitrogen and potash exports in jeopardy, driving global price spikes
  • EU sanctions on Russian fertilizer create cost burdens for European farmers
  • Phosphate-to-corn price ratio reaches worst level for this time of year on record

Iran-Israel Conflict Threatens Fertilizer Supply

Linville emphasizes the global implications of the recent military escalation: “We’ve lost the third and fourth biggest manufacturers and exporters to the world”. Iran, a major nitrogen producer, is slowing gas supply to protect infrastructure, reducing urea and anhydrous exports. Meanwhile, Israeli precautions have impacted Egyptian exports, further tightening supply. The conflict also threatens Israel’s own potash infrastructure, making the risk of further disruption substantial.

EU Sanctions Squeeze Russian Fertilizer Exports

The EU’s move to expand penalties on Russian fertilizer aims to choke off funds that could support its war in Ukraine. However, Linville notes that European farmers will pay the price. Without access to nearby, cost-efficient Russian supply, European importers must look to longer, more expensive trade routes, raising prices and lengthening delivery times.

Record-High Phosphate-to-Corn Ratio

Phosphate fertilizer prices are climbing globally, particularly influenced by strong Indian import demand. “That has a global effect and our prices have gone up as well”. At the same time, falling grain prices are making fertilizer increasingly unaffordable.

Impact on North American Farmers

For both U.S. and Canadian farmers, the squeeze is real. “They are spending more money, spending more of their bushels to pay for that input”. The convergence of geopolitical shocks and economic constraints could significantly impact planting decisions and margins.
