What the Ceasefire Means for Global Grain Prices Now

StoneX VP of Clearing and Execution Sales Bertrand Oesterle discusses the rapid changes in global crop markets following the recent Middle East ceasefire.

Key Takeaways

  • Grains and oilseed markets corrected sharply after the ceasefire
  • Weather and geopolitical risks remain top concerns for traders
  • USDA US quarterly stock and planting report and European crop conditions will be key drivers

Ceasefire Triggers Sharp Corrections

After eleven days of upside in oilseed and grain markets, the announcement of a ceasefire in the Middle East quickly reversed gains. As Oesterle explains, “We’ve gone from 11 days of upside to a day of simply, washing away all the upside”. Prices for soybean oil, corn, and Paris wheat all dropped rapidly as markets reassured themselves that major supply routes remained open and initial risks, particularly around fertilizer, had not materialized.

Weather and Crop Conditions Steady but Risks Linger

Despite the return to calmer trading, weather continues to play a pivotal role. Oesterle notes, “Crop conditions in the US for soybeans are still 66% good to excellent… up from 63% for the five-year average”. Conditions for corn and wheat are down 2% WoW and US wheat down 3% WoW, with generally positive outlooks in the US, Argentina, and Brazil. However, concerns linger over potential heat stress in European and Ukrainian maize if June sets new records for high temperatures.

Geopolitical Uncertainty Impact Market Fundamentals

While the ceasefire eased immediate pressures, Oesterle emphasizes that underlying geopolitical risks have not gone away. “We need to find out if this peace agreement is going to last… There’s still no solution for Ukraine, Russia and the tariffs”. Government stockpiling and unusual tenders in the Middle East and North Africa have also added complexity to market dynamics.

What to Watch in the Weeks Ahead

The market’s focus now shifts to upcoming data releases and evolving crop conditions. “We’re going to watch that, European corn story. But also we have an important USDA report on Monday on the 30th of June”. Early estimates point to higher US wheat and soybean stocks, while corn stock could fall and slightly larger planting areas in the US for corn and soybean, but market participants remain alert for new weather or geopolitical updates in the weeks ahead.

Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.64%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.15%. WTI crude oil is trading near $81 per barrel, while Brent trades near $87 per barrel.
