Brazil Faces Uphill Battle to Diversify Diesel Imports

Brazil Faces Uphill Battle to Diversify Diesel Imports

Bruno Santos, StoneX Brazil Market Intelligence Analyst, examines Brazil’s shifting diesel import dynamics and the impact of geopolitical pressures.

Key Takeaways

  • Brazil imports about 60% of its diesel from Russia as of 2024
  • U.S. tariff threats highlight challenges in diversifying Brazil’s diesel suppliers
  • Tighter global diesel markets and logistics complicate Brazil’s options

Brazil’s Reliance on Russian Diesel

Brazil has emerged as a major importer of Russian diesel in recent years, with around 60% of its imported diesel now coming from Russia. As Santos explains, “nowadays, around 60% of what we import comes from Russia. We have around 25% coming from United States. And the rest comes from smaller suppliers, mainly India and countries from the Middle East”. This marks a dramatic shift from earlier years when the United States was Brazil’s main supplier.

Geopolitical Pressures and Tariff Threats

Recent discussions in the U.S. government about imposing retaliatory tariffs on countries importing Russian products have put Brazil in the international spotlight. The prospect of such tariffs has triggered debate within Brazil about how to reduce reliance on Russian diesel. However, as Santos notes, “in my perspective, it will be really hard for us to make this movement of reducing the Russian diesel that we import here on the near-term”.

Why Diversifying Diesel Suppliers Is So Hard

Brazil’s difficulties in shifting away from Russian diesel come down to both logistics and market conditions. “One of them is regarding the logistics of the world,” says Santos, pointing out that American diesel is increasingly diverted to Europe, leaving Brazil with fewer alternatives. At the same time, lower inventories in both the US and Europe mean that the global diesel market is tighter, reducing supply flexibility.

The Road Ahead for Brazil’s Energy Market

As Brazil’s economy grows, so does its demand for diesel. This demand, combined with logistical constraints and global market tightness, means Brazil will likely continue relying on Russian imports despite external pressure. “What we face is, although we have more difficulties to acquire the diesel that is imported, at the same time we are facing as well more demand coming from Brazil”. The coming weeks and months will test Brazil’s ability to respond to evolving geopolitical and market pressures.

The 60% Recovery Threshold That Could Return Oil to Pre-War Oversupply

A US-Iran ceasefire has sent crude oil prices to a three-month low, stripping out the risk premium that had accumulated during the conflict. Expanded pipeline capacity and rising non-OPEC production mean markets may tip into oversupply well before Strait of Hormuz flows return to pre-war levels.
