All Eyes on Friday's WASDE Corn & Soy Yield Update
Bertrand Oesterle, StoneX VP of Clearing and Execution Sales, sets out what to watch in the September 12 WASDE report and how it may shape harvest and stocks.
Key Takeaways
U.S. corn and soybean yield outcomes steer headline risk
China buying favors South America while U.S biofuel demand stays firm
Wheat dynamics reflect Russian pricing and evolving European factors
USDA yield shifts could reset market tone
The report focus is on updated U.S corn and soybean yields after record August figures and recent weather and disease concerns. Crop condition readings eased with corn at 68 percent good to excellent and soybeans at 64 percent, still above five-year averages. Recent surveys point to more modest changes than early chatter suggested, so attention stays on how far USDA moves.
China absence and biofuel demand reshape stocks
If yields are trimmed, production and stocks could fall. Pre-report views point to only modest stock adjustments, complicated by China’s absence from U.S. soybean purchases despite strong August import volumes. Market participants note that U.S. biofuel demand remains firm, which could lean U.S. ending stocks lower even if exports lag.
Harvest momentum and oilseed surprises across regions
U.S. corn harvest has begun with early progress and warm dry weather expected to help pace, potentially pressuring prices. Outside the U.S., Ukraine’s corn harvest is starting with output indications within a high twenties to low thirties range, Brazil’s first corn planting is underway, and French maize conditions have held steady in recent weeks with EU outputs revised into a lower band than early season hopes.
In oilseeds, Canada’s canola harvest shows good quality on initial cuts with around a tenth of area harvested and indicative yields consistent with market talk. In Ukraine, winter rapeseed planting is underway after beneficial rains, while a newly applied export tax is reported to be causing paperwork issues that could slow shipments.
Russian exports and euro strength weigh on wheat
Wheat updates include fully planted fields in Argentina with some areas seeing heavy rain, U.S. winter wheat planting commencement, and Ukraine’s recently harvested crop tally improving with increased winter area plans. Russia’s production estimates have edged higher while reported export prices have eased.
Paris wheat remains influenced by multiple factors. Lower Russian offers add pressure, but expiry mechanics on the front contract and expectations for a consolidation phase also feature, alongside currency considerations as euro moves remain a key concern for exporters and producers.
