Australian cattle prices are surging as global demand, local supply shortages, and processing competition combine to push the market to new highs.
Key Takeaways
Global beef demand drives Australian cattle prices higher
US supply decline and Brazil tariffs boost exports
Processing sector competition intensifies across regions
Processing Competition Extends into Northern Markets
Atkinson explained that processors in southern Australia, facing local shortages after herd liquidation, are reaching into northern regions to secure slaughter stock. “They must reach into northern markets to secure supply”. This competition reflects both strong demand and efforts to retain workforce capacity post-COVID.
US Supply Shortfall Increases Australian Exports
The US cattle slaughter rate has dropped sharply, down 14 percent year-to-August 2025 compared with 2024, and 21 percent below the five-year average. Atkinson noted that “this lack of supply in America is creating demand signals flowing back to Australia”. With Brazilian beef exports constrained by tariffs, Australian beef is stepping into the gap.
Currency Shifts Pressure Export Margins
The Australian dollar has strengthened by around two cents against the US dollar in recent weeks, creating challenges for exporters. Atkinson highlighted that “the exchange rate rally adds pressure to margins and profitability on the price the exporter receives”. These shifts could temper the benefits of high global demand if the trend continues.
Record Female Slaughter Boosts Local Production
Female slaughter in Australia is at ten-year highs, supporting record beef production. Atkinson observed that “beef production itself is breaking records”, underscoring the industry’s ability to meet export demand despite local herd pressures. However, profitability remains under pressure as costs rise against tighter global supply.
