China’s Urea Export Halt Could Put Fertilizer Markets on Edge
StoneX VP of Fertilizer Josh Linville discusses how China’s export decisions, India’s urea tender, and North American supply trends are influencing global fertilizer markets.
Key Takeaways
China’s export pause could tighten global urea supplies
India’s tender will test market capacity and pricing power
North American ammonia stocks are tightening ahead of fall
China’s Policy at the Center of the Market
Linville noted that the Chinese government has historically intervened to stabilize domestic prices by limiting exports. “The current guidance is that exports will largely stop on October 15”. If Beijing extends shipments through year-end, it could ease global tightness and pressure prices lower. But if exports halt, sellers elsewhere may push for higher prices as competition decreases.
India’s Final Tender Adds Pressure
India’s announcement of its final 2025 tender, seeking 2 million tonnes, coincides with the uncertainty around Chinese supply. “If China shuts down, India might be looking in the marketplace all of a sudden a little more bullish, a little more confident in its price”. With offers due October 15 and shipments by December 10, India’s timing could determine short-term price direction.
Ammonia Tightness in North America
Turning to North America, Linville highlighted signs of localized tightness in ammonia markets, driven by strong demand ahead of the fall application season. “Some sellers are already committed for the rest of the year”. While not alarming, he advised buyers to engage suppliers early to secure product before peak demand.
Market Outlook Heading Into Year-End
Overall, Linville sees a finely balanced global fertilizer market. China’s export stance, India’s procurement strategy, and North American supply logistics will collectively steer price direction into early 2026. The coming weeks could determine whether the market remains stable or faces renewed volatility.
