Grain markets spent a volatile stretch reacting to a surprise U.S. corn yield, but some of the more lasting signals came from North Africa. Algeria's wheat tender, sized at 600,000 to 720,000 tons of milling wheat, shows importers switching origins, with European supply in demand, Argentina in contention and Russian wheat possibly loaded at Baltic ports. For anyone buying or selling wheat, that mix matters because it shows where demand is flowing and which exporters are losing ground.
Bertrand Oesterle, Vice President of Clearing and Execution sales at StoneX in London, follows listed commodity markets and contributes analysis on grains and oilseeds. His coverage spans wheat, corn and oilseed trade, the markets where tender results, export pace and shipping routes shape how physical grain moves.
Key Themes from the Discussion
Algeria's wheat tender shows importers switching origins, supporting European wheat and potentially opening space for Argentine supply.
Russia now ships more than half of its wheat exports through Baltic ports as European Union transit pressure grows.
U.S. wheat exports trail the pace needed for the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast despite fresh Asian demand.

Algeria's Wheat Tender Signals an Origin Switch Among Importers
Algeria's wheat tender shows buyers actively shifting where they source milling wheat, and European exporters are among the first to benefit. Bulgarian and Romanian wheat featured as the market expected, and Oesterle ties that result directly to European prices, explaining that "that has supported Paris wheat because it's European exports once again". Argentine wheat may also be part of the award, a sign that "buyers are looking for an origin switch", according to Oesterle. For European sellers, Algeria's demand confirms that export business is still flowing their way, while importers gain a wider choice of origins to draw on.
Russian Wheat Exports Shift North to Baltic Ports as EU Transit Pressure Builds
" Over the past three months, now it's the Russians' time to have to reorganize their exports, and they're doing it through the northern route," Oesterle explains. Russian wheat exports now lean heavily on Baltic ports, with 1.4 to 1.6 million tons of a 2.5 to 2.7 million ton monthly total moving north in September, and the following month's 3 million ton estimate putting 1.8 million tons through the same route for October. Latvia and Lithuania have asked for a ban on Russian grain exports through European Union ports, which makes Russia's own Baltic terminals essential to keeping wheat moving. Algeria's tender appears to have accepted Russian wheat loaded at those Baltic ports, evidence that the northern route is already reaching major importers.
U.S. Wheat Exports Trail Their Pace as Rival Origins Win Tenders
U.S. wheat exports are running about 6% behind the pace needed to reach the U.S. Department of Agriculture's annual forecast, and Algeria's tender helps explain the gap. Demand for U.S. wheat has not vanished, as Taiwan bought 105,800 tons of U.S. milling wheat after prices fell, yet the large North African volume appears to be going to other origins. For U.S. growers and merchants, that leaves the export program leaning on smaller Asian purchases while competitors take the bigger tenders. "If Argentina is able to sell to Algeria, the U.S. have presumably not participated," Oesterle says.
