CBAM Preparation Starts Well Before the 2027 Deadline

By: Editorial Team, StoneX Media

The European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is evolving into a more comprehensive regulatory framework rather than a lighter one. Businesses importing covered products into the European Union face expanding compliance obligations alongside greater exposure to carbon market volatility. The approaching 2027 implementation means preparation can no longer be limited to understanding the regulation alone. Companies increasingly need to integrate emissions reporting, financial planning and carbon price risk into their broader commercial strategy.

Leah Wieczorek, Vice President of Carbon Markets at StoneX, works with companies navigating carbon compliance and managing exposure to European carbon markets. Her experience helping businesses understand both regulatory obligations and carbon price risk provides a practical perspective on how preparation is evolving ahead of CBAM implementation.

Key Themes from the Discussion

  • CBAM certificate pricing will move from a quarterly to a weekly EU ETS average, increasing exposure to carbon price volatility.
  • Companies must balance quarterly certificate holding requirements with working capital and hedging decisions.
  • Preparing verified emissions data early can reduce compliance uncertainty and improve competitiveness.

CBAM Preparation Requires Earlier Business Planning

CBAM preparation is becoming a multi-disciplinary exercise that extends beyond regulatory compliance. Wieczorek notes that "companies seem to have increasingly an idea of what their obligation might be", although further guidance from the European Union is still expected. Businesses should use this period to establish emissions reporting processes, identify products within CBAM scope and understand future certificate requirements. Delaying these activities could compress implementation timelines as additional rules are introduced before 2027.

Carbon Price Volatility Changes Compliance Strategy

CBAM costs will increasingly reflect movements in the European Union Emissions Trading System rather than a longer averaging period. Wieczorek explains that "companies will be exposed much more to the volatility of EUA prices", while also highlighting the requirement for companies to hold at least 50% of required CBAM certificates at the end of each quarter. As a result, businesses must balance compliance, working capital and carbon price exposure instead of viewing certificate purchases as an administrative task. Understanding available hedging solutions may therefore become an important part of long-term CBAM planning.
