Europe's diesel shortfall is drawing heavily on American refiners, and diesel exports to Europe tie the price U.S. buyers pay to supply disruptions on the other side of the Atlantic. Refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast are running at elevated rates to replace diesel lost from Russia and the Middle East, pulled along by refining margins at an all-time high. For fuel distributors, farm operators and freight fleets heading into harvest and the winter heating season, that transatlantic link matters as much as the price of crude oil itself. A shortage in Europe is no longer someone else's problem when the same Gulf Coast barrels can sail either way.
Alex Hodes is Director of Energy Market Strategy at StoneX, where he tracks U.S. and global supply flows, inventory balances, refinery run rates and crack spread dynamics, the forces that connect Gulf Coast refineries to European diesel demand.
Key Themes from the Discussion
Diesel supply outages in Russia and the Middle East leave Europe drawing on U.S. refiners across the Atlantic.
Refining margins at an all-time high keep U.S. Gulf Coast refineries running at elevated rates for export.
Coastal U.S. markets, notably the Gulf Coast and New York Harbor, are most sensitive to global diesel price spikes.

Diesel Outages in Russia and the Middle East Redirect U.S. Supply
"Europe is drawing in this demand for diesel and where it's looking is all over the place. But one of the main suppliers is the US and they are just right across the Atlantic." Hodes says of the European diesel market. Europe's diesel shortage stems from supply outages in Russia and the Middle East, including attacks on Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline and on the Red Sea port of Yanbu, which had been a large supplier of diesel to Europe. As a result, U.S. refiners are among the few suppliers worldwide trying to fill the void, and Gulf Coast cargoes are crossing the Atlantic in response. For European buyers, American diesel eases a shortage, whereas U.S. buyers find themselves bidding against overseas demand for the same barrels. The real question for the domestic market is how much of that pull shows up at home.
Gulf Coast Diesel Exports Tie U.S. Prices to Global Markets
Gulf Coast diesel exports tie U.S. diesel prices to global markets because much of the country's refining capacity sits on the Gulf Coast, where it is exposed to the export trade. The U.S. diesel market consequently behaves far more like a global market than a domestic one, despite the size of the American refining system. According to Hodes, "it's really a prisoner to what the export market is doing. So if you're seeing those price rises on the global market, you're going to see that reflected in the US prices as well." Exposure to diesel exports is uneven, with the Gulf Coast "the primary market that you're seeing driven by those export dynamics", followed by waterborne hubs such as New York Harbor, which has less refining capacity and imports diesel, including barrels from Canadian refineries. Central U.S. diesel markets such as the Midwest and the Chicago area are more sheltered from global swings, although local refinery issues have lifted prices there as well. For commercial buyers, location on the map shapes how directly Europe's diesel shortfall shows up on the invoice.
