Global Dairy Trade Routes Face Sudden Reset

By: Editorial Team, StoneX Media

Global dairy markets are entering a phase where logistics and trade routes are becoming as influential as production volumes. As of March 2026, geopolitical tensions around key maritime chokepoints and longer shipping routes are forcing importers and exporters to rethink how dairy products move across regions. Because dairy markets operate on extremely tight supply and demand balances, even modest shifts in trade flows can quickly ripple into price volatility. The emerging pattern suggests that dairy prices are now more influenced by trade security and logistics risks than by production fundamentals alone.

Nate Donnay, Director of Dairy Market Insight at StoneX, YiFan Li, Head of Asia Dairy at StoneX, and John Lancaster, Head of EMEA Dairy and Food Consulting at StoneX, collectively oversee dairy market analysis across the United States, Asia and Europe. Their combined coverage of global supply chains, regional demand patterns and international dairy trade provides a uniquely comprehensive view of how shifts in logistics and geopolitics are beginning to reshape the dairy market.

Key Themes from the Discussion

  • About 6 percent of globally traded dairy products typically move through the Strait of Hormuz, making it a key chokepoint for international dairy trade.
  • Companies are increasing safety stocks as uncertainty around shipping routes encourages buyers to prioritise supply security over price.
  • Dairy trade disruption will affect products differently, with butter, skim milk powder and whole milk powder each following distinct supply chains.

Strait Of Hormuz Disruption Could Reshape Dairy Trade Routes

Global dairy trade flows are unusually exposed to geopolitical chokepoints, particularly in the Middle East. Donnay points out that "about 6 percent of internationally traded dairy products flow through the Strait of Hormuz", a concentration that makes the route disproportionately important for global dairy pricing. When even a small portion of global trade becomes uncertain, buyers and traders begin repositioning supply chains almost immediately. Donnay warns that the scale of the disruption could be significant, noting that a shock of this size could translate into "maybe on the low side a 20 percent impact to dairy prices and on the high side maybe a 50 percent impact" if trade flows are severely restricted.

Supply Chain Anxiety Is Driving Dairy Buying Behaviour

Buyer behaviour across the dairy market is increasingly being driven by logistics risk rather than price alone. Li explains that procurement decisions change quickly when supply security becomes uncertain, noting that during geopolitical stress buyers often prioritise reliability because "no matter if the price is high or low we need to make sure that we have enough supply". This shift encourages companies to rebuild inventories after extended periods of minimal purchasing, a behaviour that can rapidly tighten global markets. As Lancaster observes, uncertainty alone can move markets because "companies have a tendency to increase their buffer stocks or their safety stocks", and when multiple buyers rebuild inventories simultaneously the short term export supply can quickly disappear.
