Indian Gold Demand Stays Strong Despite Policy Pressure

India’s gold market remains under pressure as policymakers attempt to reduce soaring import costs and stabilize the country’s external balance. Gold imports reached roughly $72 billion during the last fiscal year, reinforcing gold’s position as India’s second largest commodity import after oil. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged consumers to curb gold buying alongside broader calls to reduce imported spending. Despite these efforts, India’s physical gold demand continues to hold firm because the metal remains deeply connected to household wealth, religion, and rural financial security.

Rhona O’Connell, Head of Market Analysis EMEA and Asia at StoneX, has spent decades analyzing precious metals demand across global physical and institutional markets. Her long experience tracking Asian bullion flows gives her unique insight into why India’s gold demand remains structurally resilient even during periods of economic pressure.

Key Themes from the Discussion

  • India imported approximately $72 billion of gold during the last fiscal year despite rising prices and government appeals to slow purchases.
  • Gold demand in India remains closely tied to weddings, religion, agricultural income, and long-term household savings.
  • Government restrictions may moderate imports temporarily but are unlikely to fundamentally weaken structural gold demand.

Indian Gold Buying Reflects Cultural Wealth Traditions

India’s gold demand remains unusually resilient because physical bullion continues serving as both cultural wealth and financial protection. O’Connell explains gold’s important role in religion, weddings, and family wealth transfers. Indian households still view gold jewelry as a critical savings asset that sits outside traditional financial systems. Rising prices may reduce some discretionary purchases, but they have not changed the underlying importance of gold ownership across large parts of Indian society.

Indian Farmers Continue Supporting Physical Gold Demand

India’s agricultural economy remains one of the strongest drivers behind physical bullion purchases. O’Connell states that “the farmers don’t trust the banks”, highlighting why successful harvests often lead directly to stronger gold buying across rural regions. Disposable income generated during good monsoon seasons frequently moves into physical bullion because gold is viewed as a stable store of wealth during uncertain economic periods. India’s gold market remains heavily influenced by seasonal agricultural performance alongside broader cultural demand.

India Gold Restrictions May Only Slow Demand Temporarily

India’s latest restrictions on gold imports are unlikely to fundamentally alter long-term buying behavior. O’Connell notes that “they’re not going to walk away from it”, describing the deeply entrenched attachment many Indian households have toward physical gold ownership. Previous attempts to redirect savings into financial products produced limited success because many consumers preferred bullion over paper assets. India’s gold demand may cool temporarily during periods of exceptionally high prices, but structural buying patterns are expected to remain intact.
