Meta shares fell around 6% despite very strong results, and Lam Research dropped even further after posting record quarterly revenue, dragging the Nasdaq 100 to the front of a global equity sell-off. Nasdaq 100 concentration risk is the danger that the index's heavy reliance on a small group of mega cap technology stocks turns weakness in a few leaders into outsized losses for the whole benchmark. With investors growing skeptical about the AI trade and gold, silver and cryptocurrencies also under pressure, that risk is now visible in the price action. Strong earnings alone are no longer protecting the stocks that carry the index.

Mega Cap Weakness Magnifies Nasdaq 100 Losses Across the Index
The Nasdaq 100 has taken the brunt of a global stock sell-off that began overnight, when Japan's Nikkei fell around 3%. According to Razaqzada, "with the market having relied so heavily on a relatively small group of mega cap technology stocks, any weakness in those leaders is now having a much bigger impact on the major indices like the Nasdaq 100". That narrow leadership worked in the index's favor while the AI trade was rewarded. As a result, disappointment at a handful of companies now feeds directly into Nasdaq 100 declines, leaving the benchmark exposed to how investors judge a few AI leaders.
AI Spending Doubts Turn Strong Tech Earnings Into Nasdaq 100 Selling
"It's becoming clear that investors want to see earnings that justify increasingly demanding valuations, particularly across the AI sector," Razaqzada says. Meta's results were very strong, yet its shares fell around 6% on concerns over the company's AI spending plans, and Lam Research fell even further despite comfortably beating expectations. Several other technology stocks showed a similar reaction to their earnings, confirming that the pressure extends beyond a single company. For the Nasdaq 100, where valuations are heavily dependent on strong future growth, investors questioning AI spending at the biggest companies weighs on the whole index.
