Political Messaging Is Moving the U.S. Dollar More Than Rates

By: James Stanley, Sr. Strategist

Since the beginning of the 2026, the U.S. dollar has been driven by a combination of macro policy expectations and headline-driven reactions. Despite currencies normally reflecting relative rates and central banks signalling, the recent price action in the dollar has shown that political commentary can act as an immediate catalyst for volatility. Earlier last week the dollar sold off aggressively only to reverse as new messaging emerged from Washington, reshaping expectations from market participants on how far officials were willing to tolerate USD weakness.

James Stanley, Senior Strategist at StoneX, focuses on macro-FX strategy and technical market structure across major pairs. His analysis highlights how the dollar basket is influenced by its largest components and how narrative shifts can accelerate positioning in highly leveraged markets.

Key Themes

  • U.S. dollar moves are increasingly driven by political messaging and headlines.
  • Carry trade dynamics can amplify the impact of comments on USD/JPY and DXY.
  • Upcoming events like NFPs and the ECB rate decision may intensify volatility.

Political Messaging Is Acting as a Direct FX Catalyst

Political messaging is moving the U.S. dollar because it can change market expectations instantly and force repositioning. Stanley notes that early in the week the dollar was already leaning into weakness, but last week Tuesday’s reaction accelerated further after Trump was asked about softness in the USD. Trump has often argued that a weaker U.S. dollar boosts American manufacturing, reduces the trade deficit and improves corporate profits. In simple terms, Trump believes that a lower currency makes US goods globally competitive. Stanley added that the comment had "a sizable impact" on DXY, which pushed the dollar into an oversold condition not seen in years. As a result, the dollar’s trajectory has become less about slow-moving rate narratives and more about how markets interpreted political intent.

Headlines Can Trigger Reversals in a Leveraged FX System

Political signals can also reverse dollar weakness when officials appear to moderate the message. Stanley points to a comment from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stating that the US did not need to intervene in USD/JPY, this was followed by remarks from Kevin Hassett, who highlighted the benefits of a strong dollar. In Stanley’s view, these messages suggested a desire to avoid a disorderly dollar decline that could destabilise leveraged structures like the yen carry trade.

The USD/JPY carry trade involves borrowing cheap Japanese Yen to invest in higher-yielding US dollar assets and profiting from the interest rate differential. However, when the Bank of Japan raises rates, it narrows the interest rate differential and increases the risks of a potential strengthening in the Yen. When the funding currency gets stronger it can also trigger sell-off in other carry-trade currencies like the Mexican Peso and Brazilian Real.
